Spanish Naval vessel "Juan Sebastian de Elcano" in 🇹🇹
The Juan Sebastián de Elcano is one of the most iconic and recognizable ships in the world. It isn't just a vessel; it’s a "floating embassy" for Spain and a rigorous classroom for the next generation of naval officers.
​The ship serves as a training vessel (buque escuela) for the Spanish Navy. Its primary mission is to provide Midshipmen (students at the Naval Academy) with a hands-on education in traditional navigation, astronomy, and seamanship.
​The ship is named after Juan Sebastián Elcano, the Spanish explorer who completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth in 1522 (taking over command after Ferdinand Magellan was killed in the Philippines).
​In honor of this feat, the ship’s coat of arms bears the motto:
​"Primus Circumdedisti Me" (Latin for "You were the first to encircle me").

The Elcano holds the unofficial world record for the most crossings of the Atlantic Ocean by a single hull. Even after nearly a century of service, it remains a vital, active-duty part of the Spanish fleet.
