Update #2 - 28th August 2026 - MATELOT RESIDENTS TAKE A STAND! ❤️💪🏽

After weeks of watching our only road in and out of the community deteriorate, residents decided enough was enough.

On 27th August, 2026, villagers came together and did what they could to make things a little better. With the assistance and support of the Jaggerssar, temporary repairs were done to some of the worst sections of the road. 🙏🏽

As much as we're grateful for the materials provided, this is only a TEMPORARY FIX!
Therefore, we continue to call on the relevant authorities, including the Ministry responsible for our roads and our elected representatives, to recognize the seriousness of the situation and provide the necessary intervention. Residents should not have to take on the responsibility of repairing a public roadway simply because they have been left waiting.

We stood up because we had to. And today, Matelot showed what can happen when a community comes together. 💪🏽❤️

‼️UPDATE #1 — 26th August 2026

Two weeks have passed since this post was shared, and to this day, nothing has been done to address the deplorable road conditions that villagers and daily commuters continue to face.

School reopens in just 11 days, and honestly, the question has to be asked: when are we going to see some action?

Our children deserve access to education. Our teachers deserve to get to work safely. And our residents deserve a road that is safe!

Ministry of Works and Transport we are calling for your urgent intervention. This situation can no longer be ignored. Immediate action is needed before this road becomes completely impassable.

We have been understanding and patient for quite some time, but the constant rainfall, along with the continuous movement of heavy trucks over an already badly damaged section of road, is making the situation even worse.

This is the only route in and out of our community, and it is now at serious risk of becoming completely impassable. We are not asking for anything unreasonable. We are asking for the necessary action to be taken before residents are left without safe access in and out of our community.

Are we really going to wait until our children are deprived of their education because teachers can no longer safely travel to school? Surely, it should not have to reach that point, something needs to be done, and it needs to be done now. Our community cannot continue to wait while the condition of the road deteriorates with every rainfall and every heavy truck that passes.

‼️This is not a political post. This is about the safety and well-being of our community, our children, our teachers, and every person who depends on this road each day.‼️

We are simply asking for what should be a basic necessity: a safe and accessible road. 🙏🏽

A Call for Urgent Attention to Our Roads – St. Helena/Matelot

We acknowledge and appreciate the ongoing works being undertaken for the development and betterment of St. Helena/Matelot. However, residents are increasingly concerned about the deteriorating condition of the only main access road into and out of our community.
The heavy-duty trucks transporting materials to construction sites are placing significant pressure on the roadway. Residents are therefore suggesting that, where possible, smaller and lighter trucks be used to help minimize further damage while allowing development to continue.

With the rainy season already upon us, the situation can quickly become worse, affecting residents, motorists, schoolchildren, workers, emergency access and tourism.

We want to make it clear that this is not about political propaganda or point-scoring. Similar concerns were raised under the previous government, and our position remains the same: when our people and community are affected, we must speak up.

We are appealing to the relevant authorities to hear our plea, assess the situation and provide the necessary materials to repair and stabilize the affected sections of the road before further deterioration occurs. We are not asking for anything extravagant a little intervention now can prevent a much bigger problem later.

We are not engineers, but we are residents who use this road every day. We may not have all the technical answers, but we believe good sense must prevail.

Development is important, but so is protecting the infrastructure that connects our people. Let us work together, not divided by politics, but united by our responsibility to the people of St. Helena/Matelot. 🇹🇹
