The Corinth Canal is a 6.3 km (3.9 mile) long, narrow waterway in Greece that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf, separating the Peloponnese peninsula from the mainland. The site of ancient Corinth was first inhabited in the Neolithic period (6500-3250 B.C.). It is located at the northern base of the hill of Acrocorinth at the site of today’s agglomeration, Ancient Corinth. Its fertile soil but mainly its strategic location at the intersection of land routes from the Balkan peninsula of Aimos and mainland Greece on towards the Peloponnese and waterways that connect the western Mediterranean to its Eastern counterpart, to Asia Minor and to Syro-Palestine, offered the region from very early on enormous potential for communication, growth and prosperity.

An easy drive, just two hours outside of Athens, with an archaeological museum onsite that’s well worth visiting. And another plus, the engineering marvel, the amazing Corinth Canal is very near as well.

An absolute must-visit when visiting Nafplio!

Otherwise known as the 999 steps. One of the most important and best preserved castles in Greece, an an exquisite example of Venetian architecture of the 18th century.

It’s illuminated at night, and just so beautiful.

And you don’t have to climb the steps to visit it, you can easily take the hop-on hop-off bus.

Fun fact: it’s actually 857 steps to the top!

We had the very best introduction to Greece, with our first three nights at this adorable boutique hotel. Perfectly located with sea views, super easy walking distance to the historic old town, lots of long lunches and dinners at restaurants all along the port, with the fortress above the town beautifully illuminated above at night.

Thank you for this absolutely wonderful recommendation. It was a perfect choice for us.
