We should all aspire to be as empathetic as elephants
Though the orphans in our care might come from different places in life, that doesn’t seem to phase them when it comes to accepting newcomers. Accordingly, the welcome given to Kiasa, Maktao and Kiombo when they graduated to our Umani Reintegration Unit has been the epitome of warmth and empathy. This trio might forever bear the trauma that led them to be separated from their natal herds but it is entirely apparent that older Umani females Murera, Sonje, Lima Lima and Zongoloni understand and intend to do all they can to support their new family. From gentle trunk touches to chaperoning them about in the forest, they have immediately absorbed the graduates into the Umani Springs family. As Dame Daphne Sheldrick always said, "Elephants are just like us, only better” and this scene exemplifies that.
