NTM Multilingual Tour National Taiwan Museum being the oldest in Taiwan has witnessed the development of the City. Now come explore the secrets behind the Museum with us!

◎About National Taiwan Museum◎

The Museum, the oldest in Taiwan, was established in 1908. In 1915, construction of the Museum’s new home was completed in an elegant and classical style, making the Museum one of the most noteworthy public buildings by the Japanese colonial government. In 1999, the Museum underwent a new christening as the “National Taiwan Museum.” Although its name has changed, th

e Museum is the only museum built in Japanese colonial era that, after wars and changes in government, remains open at its original site. Witnessing the history of Taiwan and withstanding the warfare and time, the building itself is an indispensable piece of urban heritage and was designated as a National Historic Site. The tour will disclose the secret details about the Museum building that bring the story of the modernization in Taiwan. Although the Museum was founded as a natural history museum, it holds some important historical treasures in its collection, for example, the Yellow Tiger Flag (the flag of the Formosan Republic), which will also be introduced in the tour. The Museum is working with the Ministry of Culture to create a museum complex incorporating historic sites and buildings at the core of Taipei City, with “Taiwan” as the unifying theme. And the tour will lead the audience exploring under the theme.

◎About the multilingual tour service in National Taiwan Museum◎

Staring from April, National Taiwan Museum will provide free English tours every Sunday afternoon and weekend tours in various Asian or European Languages to share the interesting stories behind it with the world. The multilingual tour service started a year ago firstly with Southeast Asian languages as a part of the “New Immigrant Plan”, in which the Museum recruits residents from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia and Myanmar introducing the Museum to the new immigrants in their languages. Recently, the cooperation between the Museum and the universities has been intensified, and therefore more and more students become interested in the history and development of Taiwan before WWII. This spring, the Museum has recruited a group of enthusiastic local and international students to the “International Docent Program”, and trained them with the knowledge of Taiwanese history and tour techniques. The aim of this program is to provide not only a more friendly visiting environment but also an in-depth travel experience for every visitors.

We won!🎉🎉
The International Docents of National Taiwan Museum won the 12th place in the 3rd National Youth Volunteer Award among the 83 volunteer teams from different universities, institutes and NGOs.

It is our first time competing in this category and we feel extraordinarily honored, especially seeing the presentations from other 32 teams that were also selected in the finals, an eye-opening experience! So many young people are willing to contribute their time and expertise in caring for people outside their comfort zone — Taiwan’s young generations are remarkable! 🤩🤩

No matter what place we got, we know we are the best team ❤️
Being able to give a guided tour that fascinates people requires not just solid knowledge and language proficiency but also experience in interacting with audience and handling crowds. We thank all the audience that responded to our survey and gave use an overall 4.8 (out of 5) satisfactory score.

Don’t forget! We have our monthly walking tour this coming Sunday. We’ve still got slots, so sign up now!💪

This weekend, the National Taiwan Museum has invited speakers from National Taiwan University to share their research on urban wildlife in Taipei.

Among these, the lecture on Saturday, 3/22 at 9:30 AM is highly recommended:
“When Wildlife Meets Humans: Understanding Challenges and Conflicts in Urban Ecology”
The speaker is Ms. Hsieh Chi-Heng, the administrator of the “Bird Window Collision Reporting” citizen science Facebook group and has long been collecting injured and deceased birds on the NTU campus to create specimens. She and her partners not only advocate for bird window collision issues and other urban ecology topics, but also participated in renewing the permanent exhibition at the NTU Zoology Museum, focusing on presenting the life stories behind the animal specimens - a novel and ethically-minded approach in modern museology.

From this lecture, everyone can experience the role of an urban animal funeral director, and learn how the urban environment reflects the relationship between humans and other species through taxidermy.

📌Event registration can be found here (although at this point, on-site registration is also welcome): https://www.accupass.com/event/2503131403177463612060
