This National Grasslands Week, meet a year-round grassland resident: the Chestnut-collared Longspur. This species breeds in the northern prairies and flock to the grasslands of the Southwest each winter. Because they live in dense grasses, you’re most likely to come across one when they come out of hiding to drink water. bit.ly/4ed8gav

"When we first arrived on the scene, there were three orcas. We were with this trio for hours- they played with our boat, took off to hunt dolphins, and came back to play with the boat some more. But in the evening the most amazing thing happened: the three orcas sank out on a dive, and when they surfaced again, there were at least ten of them. I was flabbergasted. In their underwater world, cetaceans often catch us by surprise by suddenly appearing or disappearing- in this particular case, it felt like magic." ~ Chelsea Mayer 📸 (instagram.com/chelseamayerphotography)

"I felt like I was in the presence of a unicorn," says Ami Vitale, a Montana-based photographer of her experience documenting rhino conservation in Kenya.

Vitale first documented the plight of the last northern white rhinos on Earth (like this one) more than 15 years ago. Last year she was able to document conservationists' efforts to move 21 eastern black rhinos in Kenya – a story that showcases the incredible persistence of people trying to save these ancient animals.

Check out more of her photography from her years following rhinos – and don't miss our behind-the-scenes video with Ami on assignment for Nature Conservancy magazine's latest issue.
