• Africa (grasslands, savannas, and open plains)
• A very small population exists in Iran (Asian cheetah)

They prefer open areas where they can run fast.

⚡ Speed and Special Features

Special adaptations:
• Long legs and flexible spine
• Lightweight body

They hunt during the day, using speed rather than strength.

⭐ The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park

The Great Migration is the annual movement of about 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, across Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara.

It is driven primarily by:
• Rainfall patterns
• Search for fresh grazing
• Breeding cycles

🐃 Breeding (Calving Season)

One of the most dramatic parts of the migration is the calving season, when wildebeest give birth.

When?
• January – March
• Peak around February

Where?
• The southern Serengeti, especially in the Ndutu region (Serengeti + Ngorongoro Conservation Area)

What happens?
• Around 500,000 calves are born in 2–3 weeks.
• Wildebeest choose this area because:
• It has nutrient-rich grass needed for nursing mothers.
• Open plains help mothers spot predators.

This attracts predators such as:
• Lions
• Hyenas
• Cheetahs
• Leopards

Calving season is extremely important for maintaining the population.
