6 days deep in the legendary Usambara Mountains — the "Galápagos of Africa" 🌿 Join expert local herpetologists for intense day & night herping through montane rainforest, spotting color-changing chameleons, rare frogs, and elusive vipers.
📍 Detailed Itinerary:
Day 1 — Arusha to Magamba Forest
Depart Arusha, scenic drive across the Maasai Steppe to Lushoto. Afternoon guided walk in Magamba Nature Reserve — target species: West Usambara Two-horned Chameleon, Spiny Pygmy Chameleon.
Day 2 — Full Day in Magamba
Morning & afternoon walks through cool moss-forest (1,650–2,300m). Search for leaf-litter geckos, skinks, arboreal frogs & forest chameleons.
Day 3 — Mazumbai Forest Reserve
Transfer to pristine Mazumbai rainforest. Hike for the endemic Mazumbai Warty Frog, chorus frogs & canopy chameleons. Night walk included.
Day 4 — Crossing to Amani Nature Reserve
Travel through tea plantations to the East Usambaras. Amani hosts 9 chameleon species, 26 snake species & 34 amphibian species. Evening spotlight walk.
Day 5 — Full Immersion in Amani
Day search for the Giant Blade-horned Chameleon & forest snakes. Night walk for Three-horned Chameleons, tree frogs & the Usambara Bush Viper. Optional Amani Botanical Gardens visit.
Day 6 — Return to Arusha
Optional final morning walk, then transfer back to Arusha (or onward to Dar/Zanzibar).
