M O U N T M E R U 🌋 // Sure, everyone knows the tallest mountain in Africa (Kilimanjaro, in case you didn’t), yet the second tallest in Tanzania is a great alternative/additional hike if you want to save some $ and time— and see AMAZING (swipe ➡️) views of the sun rising over Kili from the summit.
🌋
Mt. Meru is the 5th tallest mountain [stratovolcano] in Africa, at 4566m (Kili is 5895m)
🌋
The first part of the hike is essentially a safari— You’ll see giraffes, zebra, water buffaloes, warthogs, baboons, and monkeys—all before reaching the main trail! [due to the wildlife, a ranger is required, unlike on Kili]
🌋
The trek takes 3-4 days, and there are two sweet campsites, so you don’t need to bring as much gear or tents like on Kili.
🌋
The scenery isn’t quite as varied as on Kili, but still beautiful - those misty mountain trails : ✨
🌋
The first two days involve 4-6h hikes, including an altitude climb up Little Meru. •
🌋
The push to the summit starts at 0100 AM the third day, and is much more technical (though 2h shorter) than the Kili summit push, with steep rock slopes & loose gravel trails along the crater edge. It’s a rough and LONG- not gonna lie...but worth it. //
•
[Shout out to our incredible guide, who not only led you to the summit & back, but also cooked all of your tasty meals! In total, You’ll have guide/chef, porters, and a ranger]
🌋
Prices range about $500-$600, whereas Kili prices are around $1,500-$2,200
🌋
During low (rainy) season, you might literally be the only people on the mountain the entire trek!? Which gives you a comfortable walk on the trails 🌧 •
