Between late December and March, the plains of Ndutu and the southern Serengeti host one of the most exciting stages of the Great Migration: the wildebeest calving season.

To experience it without rushing from one park to another, you can choose a longer itinerary:

Are four days enough for a safari before travelling to Zanzibar?

Yes, if the itinerary is planned carefully and you are ready for a few full, exciting days.

Here is one possible route:

🐘 Day 1 – Tarangire National Park
Your first game drive takes you among ancient baobabs, large elephant families and the animals gathering near the Tarangire River.

🦁 Day 2 – Serengeti National Park
Travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area before reaching the endless plains of the Serengeti. Enjoy an afternoon game drive and spend the night in a tented camp.

🌅 Day 3 – Serengeti and Karatu
Start with another game drive while the animals are active, then continue towards the Ngorongoro area.

🦏 Day 4 – Ngorongoro Crater
Descend into the caldera in search of lions, elephants, zebras, buffaloes and, with some luck, the black rhino. After the safari, transfer to the airport for your flight to Zanzibar.

When you think of a safari in Tanzania, lions, elephants and giraffes are probably the first animals that come to mind. But if you look a little more closely, you’ll discover another world filled with colours, calls and unexpected encounters. 🐦

Tanzania is home to hundreds of bird species, and some of them are truly unforgettable.

Among those photographed during our safaris are the colourful malachite kingfisher, the pied kingfisher, cormorants, the striated heron and the impressive southern ground hornbill.

The southern ground hornbill is one of the most unusual birds of the savannah. It can grow to over one metre tall and spends much of its time walking across the ground in search of insects, reptiles and other small animals.

Even travellers who don’t consider themselves interested in birdwatching often return from safari with dozens of bird photos. Some have incredible colours, others have fascinating behaviours, and a few seem to enjoy posing for the camera!

I parchi, gli animali e i game drive possono essere esattamente gli stessi. Scegliere un alloggio più costoso non garantisce più avvistamenti e fare un safari budget non rende l’esperienza meno autentica.

La differenza principale riguarda il modo in cui si dorme, si mangia e ci si rilassa tra un game drive e l’altro.

Il safari budget dà priorità all’esperienza rispetto all’alloggio.

In base al pacchetto, si può dormire in un campeggio pubblico, in un lodge semplice oppure in una struttura essenziale fuori dal parco. I servizi e i pasti sono generalmente più semplici, ma questa soluzione permette di vivere il safari mantenendo più contenuto il costo complessivo.

È la soluzione scelta da molti viaggiatori perché offre un buon equilibrio tra comfort e prezzo.

Le sistemazioni dispongono generalmente di un vero letto, bagno privato, doccia calda e pasti inclusi. Possono essere lodge oppure campi tendati situati all’interno o nelle vicinanze dei parchi.

Il lusso, però, non garantisce automaticamente avvistamenti migliori. La posizione della struttura e la qualità della guida continuano ad avere un ruolo fondamentale.

Bisogna inoltre ricordare che le definizioni “budget”, “mid-range” e “luxury” non hanno lo stesso significato per tutti gli operatori.

Prima di prenotare è importante controllare il nome e la posizione degli alloggi, la presenza del bagno privato, i pasti inclusi e se la struttura si trova dentro o fuori dal parco.

La categoria migliore non è necessariamente quella più costosa. È quella più adatta al proprio budget, alle proprie aspettative e al modo in cui si desidera viaggiare.

You can spend a few days in Zanzibar, leave the island for two, three or more days of safari and then return to Zanzibar for the final part of the trip.

This works especially well for travellers whose international flights arrive and depart from Zanzibar. You have time to rest after the journey, enjoy the safari and still finish your holiday with a few relaxing days by the ocean.

It can also be a good opportunity to experience two different parts of the island. For example, you could stay in Paje or Jambiani before the safari and choose Nungwi or Kendwa after returning.

There are therefore three possible options:

The work starts before the guests enter the vehicle.

The guide checks the 4×4, prepares the equipment and plans the route according to the park, the weather and the programme of the day.

Once inside the park, the guide is constantly observing: tracks on the road, animal calls, movement in the grass and the behaviour of other wildlife. Finding animals requires knowledge, patience and sometimes a lot of waiting.

But spotting wildlife is only part of the job.

A good guide explains animal behaviour, answers questions, chooses a safe position for the vehicle and makes sure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the sighting without disturbing the animals.

The guide also manages driving times, park regulations, picnic stops, communication with lodges and any unexpected situation that may happen along the way.

At the end of the game drive, the guests can relax. For the guide, it is often already time to prepare for the next day.

A safari guide is not simply a driver. A guide is a wildlife tracker, storyteller, planner and problem solver—and one of the most important parts of the entire safari experience.

È meglio dormire dentro o fuori dal parco?

È una domanda che ci viene fatta spesso, ma non esiste una risposta valida per tutti i safari.

Dormire all’interno del parco generalmente permette di essere più vicini alle zone dei game drive, ridurre gli spostamenti da e verso i cancelli e continuare a vivere l’atmosfera della savana anche dopo la fine del safari.

Durante la notte si possono sentire leoni, iene e altri animali e, in alcuni casi, la fauna può passare vicino al campo.

Gli alloggi interni, però, sono spesso più costosi e possono avere una disponibilità limitata, soprattutto nei periodi più richiesti.

Dormire fuori dal parco può offrire una scelta più ampia di strutture, un buon livello di comfort e prezzi più accessibili. Può anche essere conveniente quando la mattina successiva l’itinerario prosegue verso un’altra destinazione. Lo svantaggio è che potrebbe essere necessario più tempo per raggiungere l’ingresso del parco e le principali zone di avvistamento.

Come scegliamo, quindi, gli alloggi per i nostri clienti?

Valutiamo:

• il percorso del safari
• la distanza dal parco successivo
• il numero di notti disponibili
• il budget
• il livello di comfort desiderato
• la composizione del gruppo
• la disponibilità nelle date richieste

Per esempio, soggiornare nella zona di Karatu può essere una soluzione molto comoda quando l’itinerario comprende Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara e Tarangire. Nel Serengeti, invece, le distanze sono molto più grandi e la posizione del campo diventa particolarmente importante.

A volte la soluzione migliore è combinare entrambe le possibilità: alcune notti all’interno dei parchi e altre in lodge confortevoli situati lungo il percorso.

Non scegliamo un alloggio soltanto perché la camera è bella. Valutiamo anche la sua posizione e il modo in cui influenzerà l’intero safari.
