waterbuck
There are two main types:
Common waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus ellipsiprymnus)
Has a white ring (“toilet seat”) on the rump
More widespread in southern Africa
Defassa waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus defassa)
No white ring, instead a solid white patch
Found in East Africa (including Tanzania & Kenya)
🟠 Grant's gazelle
Several regional forms, but generally grouped into:
Northern Grant’s gazelle
Larger body, long horns
Kenya & Ethiopia
Southern Grant’s gazelle
Slightly smaller
Common in Tanzania (Serengeti, Ngorongoro)
Coastal Grant’s gazelle (less common)
Found near coastal regions
👉 Differences are mostly in size, horn shape, and coat tone
🐂 eland
Two main species:
Common eland (Taurotragus oryx)
The largest antelope in Africa
Found in East & Southern Africa
Giant eland (Taurotragus derbianus)
Even bigger but j Africa
🟡 impala
Two recognized types:
Common impala (Aepyceros melampus melampus)
The typical impala seen in Kenya & Tanzania
Black-faced impala (Aepyceros melampus petersi)
Has a distinct black stripe on the face
Found mainly in Namibia & Angola (rare and protected)
