Early settlers and explorers often named animals based on what they looked like back home rather than what they actually were scientifically. For example, the eland, a giant African antelope, was named by Dutch settlers who thought it resembled the moose (“eland” in Dutch) from Europe.

Because of this naming approach, many animals in Africa ended up with European-style names, even when they were completely different from the animals those names originally described.
