Did you know? If you hear a deep, lion-like roar early in the morning on the savanna, it might not be a big cat, but a Southern Ground Hornbill! 🦁🔊

Their booming calls can travel up to 5 kilometers, amplified by the bright red inflatable throat pouches of the males. Southern Ground Hornbills are active hunters and they will eat almost anything they can overpower—from large insects and frogs to venomous snakes and even young hares. 🐍🌾

🔴 Conservation Status: Sadly, these unique ground-dwellers are currently listed as Vulnerable globally (and Endangered in Southern Africa) due to habitat loss.

NOTE REGARDING THE PHOTO BELOW: This was a very unique sighting we had! Although their diet consists entirely of meat, Southern Ground Hornbills are strict hunters that only eat live prey they catch themselves. Normally you won't find them scavenging on decaying remains (in this case a crocodile...).

Did you know? Elephants can smell water, and they’re exceptionally good at it!

They can also detect it when it's underground. These impressive animals don’t smell the water itself (H₂O is odorless), but the volatile organic compounds released by moist soil, algae, bacteria, and plants around groundwater.

Elephants use this ability to find hidden water, even digging in dry riverbeds during droughts. They often combine their sense of smell with low-frequency hearing, ground vibrations, and memory of past water sites to locate underground water up to almost 20 kilometers away.

Did you know? People often say the wildebeest looks like a wondrous mix of different animals. Its body, mane and tail resemble those of a horse, its legs those of an antelope, and its head, with horns curving forward like hooks, looks a bit like that of a bull. And to top it all off, it even has zebra‑like stripes!
