Majestic lions basking on the ancient kopjes of the Serengeti – nature’s perfect thrones. These rocky outcrops, formed millions of years ago by volcanic activity and sculpted by erosion, rise dramatically from the plains. Kopjes provide vital vantage points for predators like lions to survey their kingdom, while offering shelter and water pockets for wildlife during the dry season.

One of the most iconic and fascinating birds of the African savanna, the Southern Ground Hornbill is a sight to behold! 🔹 Unlike most hornbills, they spend most of their time walking on the ground, hunting reptiles, insects, and small mammals.
🔹 These birds can live up to 50 years, making them one of the longest-living birds in Africa.

🟤🦊 The Clever & Resourceful Jackals of the Savannah! 🦊🟤

Jackals may not be the biggest predators on the plains, but they are some of the smartest and most adaptable! These small yet fierce canids are often spotted in Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire, playing a vital role in the ecosystem.

🔹 Jackals are opportunistic hunters and scavengers, feeding on anything from small mammals and birds to leftovers from big cats’ kills.
🔹 They form strong monogamous pairs, working together to hunt and raise their young.
🔹 There are three species in East Africa: the Black-backed Jackal, Side-striped Jackal, and Golden Jackal.

The Sentinel of the Serengeti 🦩

Perched high on a dead tree, the saddle-billed stork surveys the Serengeti like a true guardian of the wild. With its striking black-and-white plumage, bold red-and-yellow bill, and elegant stance, this rare and majestic bird is one of Africa’s most iconic sights. Unlike many other storks, these beauties are usually seen in pairs, fiercely territorial and known for their silent communication—using subtle head movements instead of calls.

Hyenas: The Shadow of the Great Migration

The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles, with over a million wildebeest, zebras, and other grazers traversing the Serengeti in search of fresh grass. But where there is movement, there are predators—and among them, hyenas play a crucial role.

Our guide, Martin, shared fascinating insights as we witnessed hyenas closely following the migration. These intelligent and highly social predators are not just scavengers; they are skilled hunters, often outpacing lions in efficiency. Under the cover of darkness, their eerie whoops echoed through the night near our lodge in central Serengeti, a reminder of their constant presence in the ecosystem.

Hyenas keep the wildebeest herds in check, targeting the weak, sick, or injured. Their relentless pursuit ensures only the strongest survive, maintaining the balance of this delicate wilderness. Watching them operate in coordination, using strategy and teamwork, is a thrilling experience that every safari enthusiast should witness.

For those craving a front-row seat to this raw, untamed drama, The Woven Experience offers expertly guided safaris that bring you up close to nature’s most incredible moments. Whether it’s tracking hyenas on the hunt or witnessing the thunderous migration crossings, every adventure is unforgettable.

The Great Migration Arrives Early in Central Serengeti!

Nature is always full of surprises! This year, the wildebeest migration has arrived earlier than usual in Central Serengeti, as unexpected shifts in rainfall patterns have forced the herds to move northward from Southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area in search of fresh grazing lands.

💡 Did you know?
🔹 The Great Migration is a year-round journey of over 1.5 million wildebeests, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, across Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Masai Mara.
🔹 Rainfall is the driving force behind their movement, influencing where and when they travel.
🔹 The migration is filled with dramatic moments, from the calving season (Jan–March) in the south to the intense river crossings (July–Sept) at the Mara and Grumeti Rivers, where crocodiles lie in wait.
🔹 The Serengeti is the only place in the world where such a massive land migration occurs annually!

Witnessing this phenomenon is a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Whether you want to see newborn calves, thrilling predator action, or the legendary river crossings, The Woven Experience can tailor your safari to match your budget and preferred sights.

A Rare Encounter with the Ghost of the Serengeti!

On today’s safari, we had an incredible sighting of a male leopard in Serengeti National Park—a true master of stealth and strength! This elusive predator had just made a kill, a wildebeest calf, and skillfully hoisted it up a tree to keep it safe from other predators and scavengers like hyenas, jackals, and vultures. Having already enjoyed part of his meal, he rested on a thick branch, keeping watch over his hard-earned catch.

💡 Did you know?
🔹 Leopards are solitary and spend most of their daytime resting in trees.
🔹 They can carry prey up to twice their weight high into tree branches.
🔹 The Serengeti is home to one of Africa’s largest leopard populations, but these elusive cats are still one of the hardest Big Five animals to spot!
🔹 Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spans over 14,750 km² and hosts the Great Migration, the world’s largest movement of land animals.

Witnessing these magnificent creatures in the wild is an experience like no other! Book your safari with The Woven Experience and create unforgettable memories.

A Day of Wildlife Wonders in Ndutu & Serengeti!

Our safari adventure began early in the morning as we left the lodge and headed towards Lake Ndutu. The first incredible sight of the day? The Ndutu Pride feasting on their overnight catch—two wildebeests! Unlike yesterday, today we spotted the male of the pride, resting proudly alongside the others in the shade while Egyptian vultures circled in, waiting for their turn at the leftovers.

Continuing our journey, we witnessed the breathtaking spectacle of the Great Migration—herds of wildebeests with their young calves marching across the plains. The horizon was alive with wildlife: Thomson gazelles, elands, ostriches, zebras, hyenas, and even the kori bustard, Africa’s heaviest flying bird.

As we entered Serengeti National Park, the landscape continued to amaze with endless wildlife sightings. But the true highlights? A sleek cheetah scanning the plains and a majestic leopard lounging on a tree, both perfect reminders of why Serengeti is one of the world’s most iconic safari destinations.

We ended the day at our lodge, just in time for a stunning sunset over the Serengeti—an unforgettable way to close an epic safari day. 🌞✨

Afternoon with the Kings of Ndutu

In the heart of Ndutu, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, we came across a pride of lions taking shelter from the scorching afternoon sun under a shady acacia near Lake Ndutu. With full bellies and the heat of the day pressing down, they were in deep relaxation mode—some sprawled out, others lazily flicking their tails, completely unbothered by our presence.

Did you know? Lions can sleep up to 20 hours a day, conserving their energy for nighttime hunts! 🌙🐾

**A Rare Sight in Tarangire National Park!**

A pride of lions has just brought down a fully grown giraffe on the riverbed—a remarkable and dangerous feat! Giraffes are powerful animals, and their kicks can be lethal, strong enough to shatter a lion’s skull. It takes the combined strength and strategy of the entire pride to take one down.

Now, after an intense and exhausting hunt, the lions are resting, waiting for the sun to set. With full bellies, their heart rates are elevated in the heat, so they conserve energy before feasting again. This massive kill will sustain the pride for days until their next hunt.
