Hippopotamus 🦛
Scientific Name: Hippopotamus amphibious
Hippo’s Cannot Swim – We Know, It’s Shocking!
Hippos spend pretty much their whole lives in water, so it really doesn’t sound right when you hear that they actually cannot swim. It is true though, the main reason they spend so much time in the water is mainly to protect their extremely sensitive skin from the harsh African sun.
Many people think hippos are great swimmers when in reality, they cannot swim at all!
When you see a hippo in a body of water, they’reactually balancing on their tippy-toes or standing on a sandbank. Hippo’s sink when in deep water, which isn’t too surprising considering males can weigh up to 3 200 kg’s! So when a hippo is underwater, they aren’t swimming but rather trotting along on the bottom.

Cheetah Facts:
The cheetah’s undercoat ranges in color from light tan to a deep gold and is marked by solid black spots. These spots are not open like the rosettes found on a leopard or jaguar’s coat, which is one way to quickly identify the cheetah.
Distinctive black tear stripes run from the eyes to the mouth. The stripes are thought to protect the eyes from the sun’s glare. It is believed that they have the same function as a rifle scope, helping cheetahs focus on their prey at a long distance range by minimizing the glare of the sun.
Cheetah tails end with a bushy tuft encircled by five or six dark rings. These markings provide them with excellent camouflage while hunting and make them more difficult for other predators to detect. The tail is also thought to be a signaling device, helping young cubs follow their mothers in tall grass. The tip of the tail varies in color from white to black among individuals.

Calving Season in Ndutu (NCAA) usually takes place between January and February of each year. It really depends* on the yearly short rains.

In January, the wildebeest and zebra herds begin making their way to the south of the Serengeti after the rains start falling.

Rumour has it that the herds know when it is raining as they can smell the rain while others believe they can sense the air pressure changes.

However, what we do know is that, it is the rain that they have a calling from. It is said that in the calving season, over half a million wildebeest are born meaning some days the birth toll goes upto 8,000 calves a day!!

The terrain of Ndutu, with short grass plains aids in having higher chances of survival for the new born calves. How? The shorter grass plains help the wildebeest mothers to watchout for approaching predators as they get easier to spot in this flat terrain.

Nature is truly remarkable!
