The Lemosho and Machame Routes are widely considered the best Kilimanjaro routes for their high success rates, stunning scenery, and excellent acclimatization profiles, with the Lemosho Route offering superior views and low initial crowds.
For those prioritizing quiet and an off-the-beaten-path experience, the Rongai Route is a good choice, though its success rate is lower. The Northern Circuit provides the most scenic and longest journey, while the Marangu Route is unique for its hut accommodations but generally has a lower success rate compared to longer routes.
Top Routes for Success and Scenery
Lemosho Route:
Often called the most scenic and beautiful route, it offers stunning panoramas of the Shira Plateau and diverse landscapes. It also provides an excellent acclimatization profile, which leads to higher success rates.
Machame Route:
The most popular "Whiskey Route," Machame is known for its impressive views, varied habitats, and good acclimatization. It's a moderately difficult trek, well-suited for first-time backpackers.
Routes for Specific Preferences
Rongai Route:
This is the best choice for avoiding crowds, as it's the quietest route and approaches from the northern side. It's often recommended for less experienced climbers and during the rainy season, but has a lower success rate than Lemosho or Machame.
Northern Circuit:
The longest and newest route, it circles the entire northern side of the mountain, offering unique scenery and a quieter experience before joining the main routes.
Marangu Route:
Known as the "Coca-Cola Route," it's the only route that offers dormitory-style hut accommodations, making it a popular choice for those who prefer not to sleep in tents.
Other Options
