Why do lions climb trees especially when it rains?

Seeing a lion in a tree is one of Africa’s rarest wildlife moments. While lions are known as kings of the grasslands, some have learned that trees offer surprising advantages.

During rainy weather, climbing into a tree can help a lion stay above wet, muddy ground, avoid irritating insects, and enjoy a better vantage point to watch the landscape. The cool breeze and elevated position also provide a comfortable place to rest while keeping an eye on potential prey and rivals.

Although tree-climbing lions are uncommon, certain populations particularly in Tanzania have made this remarkable behavior part of their daily lives.
