Nobody asks about the birds before safari.
Nobody.
People are worried about lions, leopards, migration crossings, whether they need khaki outfits like they’re auditioning for National Geographic…
Meanwhile about 3 days into Tanzania they’re suddenly yelling:
“WAIT WHAT IS THAT BLUE ONE??”
And just like that… voila, bird people! 🪄😂
The wild part is Tanzania is genuinely one of the BEST birding destinations in Africa with over 1,100 recorded bird species.
So yes, your local Saturday morning birding group back home may still be celebrating spotting one interesting warbler…
…and meanwhile you’re casually checking off:
lilac-breasted rollers,
grey crowned cranes,
secretary birds,
kori bustards,
and superb starlings before breakfast.
Also birds in Tanzania are RUDELY beautiful. Like somebody gave tropical colors to completely unnecessary species just for fun.
So before anyone panics, you do NOT need to be an experienced birder for safari birding.
Honestly? Most people become bird people accidentally.
At Pamoja, our guides are incredible at spotting and identifying birds even for total beginners, which makes a huge difference because otherwise you’re just out there saying: “look… a small brown bird?” 😂
If you WANT a better birding experience though, bring:
binoculars,
a decent zoom lens if you have one,
neutral-colored clothing,
and enough phone storage because apparently everyone becomes emotionally attached to lilac-breasted rollers specifically.
It happens every time. Yer welcome. 🐦🦜🐦⬛
