**How do researchers ID elephants over the years? 🐘**
Turns out each elephant has its own “fingerprint.” The most reliable clue? Their ears — every notch, tear, and hole is unique and stays put for life. Tusks help too: length, curve, symmetry, whether one’s broken or missing. Add in scars and even the way an individual walks, and researchers can recognize a familiar face (or ear) from years back.
This big bull is a perfect example. See the notches and tears along his right ear? That’s his signature — instantly recognizable to anyone who’s been tracking him.
Multiply that by hundreds of elephants in a population, and you get a sense of just how much patient, careful observation goes into long-term research. 🌿
