The most vulnerable a giraffe will ever look

Everything about a giraffe is built for height, until it needs a drink

That awkward splay, front legs spread wide, neck folded almost in half just to reach the water? It’s the one moment they can’t watch their surroundings. No towering vantage point, no early warning. Just exposed, for as long as it takes

Which is exactly why it’s one of the rarest things to actually witness in person

Most giraffe sightings are grazing, walking, watching you back from a distance. Catching one drink, especially a small herd taking turns at a quiet river bend is a different kind of moment entirely. Vulnerable, unguarded, and gone in seconds.

Four cheetahs. One tucked-away patch of shade. Zero footprints from other vehicles.

Finding a group like this resting undisturbed is about knowing where to look, and just as importantly, how to approach once you find them.

Cheetahs are easily stressed, and a rushed or careless approach can push them to move, hide, or abandon good cover. The fact that these four stayed sound asleep, barely lifting an ear, tells you everything about how this sighting was handled.

Smooth experiences like this is the difference experienced guiding makes. Not just finding wildlife, finding it in a way that respects the animal first, and still gets you close enough to feel it.

Today is World Rhino Day.

And we have something worth celebrating.

Tanzania is one of the last places on earth where you can still watch a wild rhino move across an open plain, unhurried, ancient, completely indifferent to the fact that its species is hanging by a thread.

There are fewer than 6,000 black rhinos left on Earth. The Ngorongoro Crater holds one of the last stable wild populations, roughly 20 to 30 individuals living inside, watched over and protected every single day.

Seeing one in the wild isn’t just a sighting. It’s a reminder of how close we came to losing them entirely and how much work it took to pull them back.

Every rhino you see out there is a conservation success story on four legs.

There are moments on safari that don’t feel real while they’re happening. Where your brain is simultaneously saying back up and don’t you dare look away.

This is one of them.

The hippo is simply going about its day, we’re the lucky ones because we get to come and watch these stunning creatures just merely exist.

Not every moment on a Windfall drive is a leopard.

Sometimes it’s this.

Two black-backed jackals, resting at the roadside in the early morning light, completely unbothered. One watching. One not.

No drama. No chase. Just a quiet few minutes with two animals going about their morning the same way they have for thousands of years.

This is what we mean when we say we don’t rush. No itinerary says ”move on in five minutes.” If the jackals are interesting, we stay with the jackals. If the light is doing something beautiful, we stop for the light.

The guests who come back to Windfall always say the same thing: it wasn’t just the big sightings. It was the pace. The stillness. The feeling that every single thing out there was worth stopping for.

This is a Southern Ground Hornbill, one of Africa’s most ancient, most striking, and most overlooked birds. And it just snatched an insect from mid-air with the precision of something that has been perfecting this exact move for over 100 million years.

A few things worth knowing:

That red facial skin isn’t decoration, it’s a dominance and health signal, read instantly by other hornbills.

They are almost entirely terrestrial, one of the only hornbills that hunts on foot, stalking through grass like a small predator.

Ground Hornbills are Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. They breed so slowly, one chick every 9 years on average, that population recovery from any loss is painfully difficult.

The trunk has 40,000 muscles. Your entire body has 600.
And it’s doing two completely different things across these two frames, stripping acacia branches with surgical precision, then gripping bark with the sensitivity of a human fingertip.

A few things worth knowing:

🐘 Elephants are right or left-tusked, just like handedness in humans. The dominant tusk wears down faster. Look closely at both frames.

🐘 That trunk can hold 8 litres of water and smell a source from 19km away.

🐘 Rubbing against specific trees isn’t random, it’s thought to be deliberate self-medication for skin and parasites.

🐘 Those tusks aren’t just for show, they dig, strip, lift, and signal dominance before a single confrontation begins.

The most complex land animal on earth. Still full of surprises every single drive.
