Every year between July and October, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles travel from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of fresh grass.

To complete the journey, they must cross the Mara and Grumeti Rivers — and so must brave one of Africa’s deadliest ambush predators: the Nile crocodile.

Injured or exhausted wildebeest are the most vulnerable. Weakened by the long migration, they struggle to move fast enough to escape.

Crocodiles target these individuals, lunging from the shallows with explosive speed, clamping their jaws, and using their powerful bodies to drag the animal underwater.

The river crossing is one of the most dramatic predator-prey events on Earth — and it plays out hundreds of times during migration season.

A dominant male lion can consume up to 15% of his body weight in a single sitting (roughly 30-40kg of meat).

Because he is the pride’s primary defense against rival coalitions, the pride “allows” him the lion’s share to ensure he remains strong enough to protect their territory.

While lionesses are famous for communal nursing, they are surprisingly “grudging” when it comes to meat.
In times of scarcity, mothers will actively fight off their own cubs to ensure they (the hunters) survive.

It sounds brutal, but if the mother dies of hunger, the cubs have a 0% chance of survival.

Notice the low-frequency growls in the video. These aren’t just expressions of anger; they are distance-regulating signals. By vibrating their vocal cords without a full roar, lions signal their exact “combat intent” to others, often preventing a full-blown fight that could lead to injury.

Why the rush?
Why the intensity? Because in Tanzania’s high-density ecosystems, a kill is a “dinner bell” for every scavenger within 8km.

A large pride can lose up to 20% of its meat to spotted a large group of hyenas if they don’t consume it quickly or defend it with total aggression.
