Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the tallest free-standing mountain on Earth, standing at 19,341 feet (5,895 meters). Unlike mountain ranges that rise gradually, Kilimanjaro towers alone above the surrounding savannah, creating one of the most dramatic silhouettes in Africa.
One of the mountain’s most fascinating features is its five distinct climate zones, each resembling a completely different ecosystem. The journey begins in cultivated farmland filled with coffee and banana plantations, then shifts into a dense rainforest alive with monkeys, birds, and unique plant life. Higher up, the landscape opens into heath and moorland, where giant groundsels and lobelias grow. Beyond that lies a stark alpine desert with intense sun, cold winds, and little vegetation.
At the top, trekkers reach the arctic zone — a world of glaciers, ice fields, and volcanic rock. Though the glaciers have been retreating due to climate change, the summit remains one of the few places in equatorial Africa where snow can be found year-round.
This combination of height, isolation, and ecological variety makes Kilimanjaro one of the most extraordinary mountains on the planet, attracting adventurers, scientists, and nature lovers from around the world.
