Mahale mountains National Park

Mahale mountains National Park Mahale Mountains National Park The western boundary of the park protects an adjacent 1.6 km wide strip of Lake Tanganyika’s waters.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Famous for containing some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa, the Mahale Mountains National Park was gazetted in 1985, covers an area of 1 613 km² and is located about 128 km south of Kigoma town on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The land in and around Mahale is the traditional homeland of the Watongwe and Waholoholo tribes. Japanese primate researchers b

egan exploring along the shore of Lake Tanganyika, south of Kigoma as early as 1961. In 1965, the researchers established their first camp, ‘Kansyana’, in Mahale and began habituating chimpanzees. The terrain is mostly rugged and hilly, and is dominated by the Mahale Mountains chain that runs from the northwest to the southeast across the park. The highest peak (Mount Nkungwe) rises to 2 462 m above sea level. MAP

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Mahale offers a number of outstanding attractions for visitors, from tracking wild habituated chimpanzees, to mountain climbing, snorkelling, fishing, kayaking and relaxing on deserted, pristine, white, sandy beaches. Walking safaris in the beautiful, lowland forest allow close encounters with a vast array of birds and animals, including a group of habituated chimpanzees. The opportunity to track chimps in their natural habitat is Mahale's foremost tourist attraction. An ascent of the highest peak in the Mahale Mountains ridge, Mt. Nkungwe, is one of the most spectacular activities available to tourists. It takes 2-3 days to reach the summit, and the best time for climbing is during the dry season (May – October). Whilst camping on the mountain at night, it is often possible to see the spectacle of 'fishing fire', as the kerosene lamps carried by small fishing boats light up across the Lake. Lake Tanganyika contains more than 250 species of fish found nowhere else on Earth, many of which can be viewed by snorkelling in the shallows along Mahale’s shoreline. Long walking trips can be arranged for viewing big game such as lion, elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe and leopard. These safaris may require up to 7 days. Sport fishing on the fresh waters of Lake Tanganyika is possible under special licences available to visitors. Cultural tourism activities entailing visits to the nearby villages can also be arranged. Kigoma town and the historical town Ujiji are worth a detour. Kigoma is the capital of the Kigoma District and the economic centre of the region. Ujiji is a historical town dating back to the days of German colonial rule in Tanganyika. In the 19th century, Dr. Livingstone travelled to Ujiji in a bid to stop the slave trade. Other tourist destinations in western Tanzania that can complement a visit to Mahale Mountains National Park include Gombe Stream and Katavi National Parks, lying north and south of Mahale respectively. Standard Rates for safaris in Tanzania
There are two things we can guarantee about your trip:
1. It will not be cheap
2. It will be worth every penny
On the budget end, spending about $150-180 per person, per day of the safari is the right range. It's a range because the exact price depends on the specific parks, group size, time of visit, and so on. If someone offers you a safari for substantially less than $100, they will either have to sponsor your trip themselves (rather unlikely), or they will just disappear with your money. This is because a park like Serengeti charges $50/person/day just for entry, and another $30 for basic camping. That's $80/person/day, with no car, cooking, guide, or any other costs. And if you want to visit Ngorngoro, the fees just rose to $50/person and $200 per vehicle.
The grey area are the operators who offer $100/day, or so. Your safari will happen, but this price will often mean that the company is cutting costs. The cars may be unreliable, instead of three days inside a national park, you might get two and another day of just driving around; the driver and cook may get paid so little that they will be extorting tips from you the whole time. This type of economizing may save you some money but ruin your trip. If you spent a day on the side of the road because the car broke down and the company didn't supply a new one, was the saving really worth it?
Of course, on the more expensive side, there is really no limit to how much you can spend. There are plenty of posh lodges that will gladly allow you to part with $600 per day. But, if you don't have that kind of cash, you can easily do a non-camping safari with lodges at about $250-$330/person/day.
For the exact breakdown of park fees, take a look at Tanzania National Parks, Kenya Wildlife Service, Uganda Wildlife Authority sites.
These charges would include the following services:
• Park entrance fees, Camping fees, Ngorongoro Crater service charge,
• Full board accommodation at the Camps (for camping safaris),
• Full board accommodation at the Sopa and Wildlife Lodges (for lodge safaris),
• Food (3 meals a day),
• Bottled drinking water provided,
• Cook salary and cooking utensils,
• Sleeping tents,
• Foam mattresses,
• Camping chairs and tables,
- 4X4 safari vehicle(s) with Driver-guides – window seats guaranteed.
NB: Tips, Alcohol and Equipment of personal nature are all excluded…

Tanzania’s Mahale Mountains National park

In addition to being one of the best places in the world for up-close encounters with chimpanzees, Mahale Mountains National Park, nestled on the Lake Tanganyikan shoreline in western Tanzania, is absolutely stunning. Forested mountains cascade down to the lake shore, the mist-covered peak of Mount Nkungwe rises up in the background and crystal-clear waters teeming with fish lap against white sand coves.

The park, Tanzania's most remote and one of its most alluring, is first and foremost a chimpanzee sanctuary. About 1700 chimpanzees live within its 1613sqkm area, but the focal point for visitors is the 60-strong Mimikere, or 'M' group, which has been the subject of research for more than four decades. While the M group chimps are well habituated, spotting human’s closest relatives is almost always a challenge. Don long trousers, sturdy boots, a hat and a surgical mask (these are distributed to all visitors by park guides at the beginning of a tracking expedition) and prepare yourself for some sweaty, steep climbing through often-dense vegetation.

You may not spot any chimps on your first try, but it is rare to spend two or three days in the park without seeing one. The experience itself is captivating: almost without warning, a chimp brushes past you on the trail, several individuals become visible in a clearing just ahead or high above in the tree tops. Time stops, and the one-hour viewing period permitted by park authorities is over in a flash.

During the wet season, from November until May, the chimpanzees spend much of their time in the trees and can be difficult to find. In the height of the rains from March through May, the trails become unpleasantly muddy. In the dry season months of June to October the undergrowth is less dense and the chimps frequently come down near the main lodge area to feed.

In between chimp tracking expeditions, Lake Tanganyika beckons for snorkelling, kayaking and hippo- and crocodile-spotting forays. The forest around the main lodge area is full of birds, with guinea fowl, hornbills, kingfishers and many more all readily seen on short walks. In the evening, the setting is magical as the sun sets over the Congo Mountains in the distance, and tiny lights from fishing boats flicker across the lake.

For anyone with additional time and energy, the brooding peak of 2462m-high Mount Nkungwe is eminently climbable and makes a fine adventure. Depending on the time of year, you may need to hack your way through high grass and brush for part of the climb, but the remoteness and the stillness are wonderful. Elephants, giraffes and even lions wander around the eastern slopes of the mountain, and it is essential to be accompanied by an armed guide, although encounters with these animals are rare. More common are roan and sable antelopes, porcupines and the ubiquitous warthog. Allow two days to climb up and one day to return for Nkungwe climbs, camping en route, although a more strenuous two-day option is also possible.

Kigoma, the closest major town, is about 130km north of Mahale along the lakeshore, and this remoteness makes getting to and from the park half the fun. You can take a scenic scheduled charter flight over the back ridge of the Mahale Mountains from Arusha (four hours) with Zantas Air or from Dar es Salaam (six hours) with Safari Airlink. You can charter a speedboat from Kigoma (four to five hours, book through Mbali Mbali) or from Lake Shore Lodge in Kipili village, south of the park (five to six hours). A leisurely, albeit adventurous option would include going down the lake on the ageing MV Liemba steamer from either Kigoma (10 hours) or Mpulungu, Zambia (30 hours) to the tiny Lagosa village (north of Mahale), from where you would need to arrange a boat transfer in advance with park authorities for the remaining distance (about one hour) to Mahale. First-class cabins on the MV Liemba can be booked at the port in Kigoma or Mpulungu, or through your lodge.

Up to date information on Mahale as of January 2018**

Before our decision that we specialize our safaris for the western circuit of Tanzania especially Mahale , Gombe and Katavi spent a great deal of time trying to get the following information through all the guide books and online forums. We have now done it so have the following information to pass onto travelers who are specifically prompted for budget travels
Mahale, in Western Tanzania is one of the world’s most stunning and remote places on the Earth. Lush rain forest flow down the mountains to Lake Tanganyka. Congo appears in the distance over the misty waters while huge numbers of monkeys and primates make this paradise their home. This includes large numbers of Chimpanzees.
But how can you join the traveling elite and visit without completely emptying your bank balance? You can contact the following budgeter Hussein ( [email protected])
Mahale currently offers three options of accommodation, two super luxury (and very expensive) and the government bandas (Mango Tree). The two luxury lodges (Greystoke, reportedly Bill Gates' favorite getaway, and Kungwe Beach), will organize everything for you but you will need deep pockets. Paying thousands of $ per night does not give you different primates or indeed different guides. Also note that The owners of Kungwe beach also offer hunting safaris around Tanzania so remember who's pockets you are filling.
Rumor has it that Mahale will soon be joined by a third, as Fox Safaris has just been granted a concession to build on the site of a previous lodge site. After staying at the Fox locations several times, this will be a great addition considering the quality of all of the Fox safari's.
There is a budget alternative. The government run Mahale Mango Tree Bandas offer 5 well equipped units. It was difficult for us to get hold of any information prior to arriving but once here, we were surprised on how well run and how good the facilities are.
These are the details at the time of writing (Jan 2018).
**ACCOMMODATION TRAILS CAN BOOK**

5 self contained Bandas, each with two beds, separate but on-suit shower and toilet. Mahale keep numbers down on purpose within the park (Chimps need their space). The Bandas are locate about 100m from the beach within rainforest. While not luxury, they are very well appointed and comfortable. Hot water is both solar and from the generator. We always had very hot water. Lighting is also solar but available 24 hours. Power for the all important camera battery charging is available morning and evening. 6pm to midnight during the week and 2pm to midnight at weekends.
**FACILITIES**

There is a central building with kitchen and dinning/lecturer room along with a satellite tv. The kitchen is very basic but has all the cooking equipment, plates and cutlery you will need. They have a two ring gas stove, a fridge and running water. Remember this is jungle so you need to get creative on protecting your food from wildlife.
Yellow baboons and velvet monkeys are regular visitors, and will love to get their hands on your supplies. Prepared to be stared at a lot (and be entertained as the Velvets walk past on to two legs).
Officially you need to be self sufficient and bring in all your own food. However, if you contact Peter on the details below, he can organize food and a cook. This not only gives back to the community but also makes your life much easier (we found this out after we arrived). If you have not organized this BEFORE you arrive then DEFIANTLY bring in your own food. There is some help on this. Bring in a much as you can carry. If you are coming in via the airstrip, the accountant, Damian, will greet you to take your fees. Ask him nicely and he may be able to get the farmer from the village who has a place next to the airstrip to give you some fresh food direct from the field. The park HQ, a small boat ride between the airstrip and the camp also has a shop but this is really for drinks (they have water, soda, beer and wine).
Regarding water, if you have not brought in enough bottled water for your duration then purify the water from the tap. It is a fresh water lake but.... For all of our cooking, we used both tablets then filtered. We used water purification tablets and then the Sawyer Mini water filter for our cooking and food washing water although we could also drink the filtered water we had enough bottled water for drinking.
**TRAIL’S GUIDES**
They have some of the best government guides we have met in Tanzania. They work with all the camps and will stay around to answer any questions. Remember this is a research facility so you will see the teams of researchers around. The guides can go with you at any time but normally it is the morning. Information is past around all the guides and researchers on where the primates are and will go out as long as it takes (we were lucky and met Chimps every day but it is not guaranteed). When you come across the chimps, strict rules apply. Everyone must stay 10m from them where possible; they will give you masks that must be worn when in Chimp area along with a handful of logical rules. Chimp time is a strict 1 hour from when you first encounter a chimp. Meeting our nearest relatives is a life changing experience in one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
**GETTING TO AND FROM MAHALE BY THE TRAILS ASSIST**

We can book Safari Airlink from Katavi (a somewhat exciting flight). When it is time to leave, we do organize travel by boat and car to Kigoma you can be joined by our staff too

There is a plan to build a road to the airstrip which will make a huge difference but they need to build two bridges first. If you are coming in from another National Park, Safari Airlink - www.flysal.com is probably the best way to fly in and out. They fly on Monday and Thursday, else Kigoma is your next easiest route and transport can be organized by The Trails of East Africa

The other options are by charter boat (expect to pay $3k, yes I did say $3,000, and it takes 4/5 hours from Kigoma), Lake taxi from Ujiji ($4 but dangerous and can take over 24 hours with no toilet), or the MV Liemba ($35 but often not sailing). If you are not flying into the airstrip I would recommend using the Trails of East Africa we can arrage speed boat transfers and also book Mv. Liemba if you would wish . From Kigoma wecan organize a car to Herembe (3 hours), then a boat to the Bandas (2 hours). Costs below.

**COSTS**
All these prices are very subject to change and are based on the prices we charge .
Please check with us first and we give you the updated cost on the same.
All park, guide and Banda fees can be paid on the invoice (transport depends on who is actually on what you decide to use it but we can advise). If you get us to organize cooking, food or drinks, that is exactly we we do as specialist.
Ask Trails of East Africa for the following:
