My stay in Likamba couldn’t have been better. It was amazing to be with all the visiting families. We shared many precious moments together.

The first day, we milked goats and cows with big horns. The day after, we learned Maasai beading, among other things, and then enjoyed a special dinner at a boma before retiring for the night.

Within walking distance is a viewpoint with a view of Mount Meru, an amazing sight as long as the mountain isn’t hidden by clouds. There is also a cool bar in the area, which, I was told, was a new project.

All that being said, what I liked best was just being able to experience village life. I would have loved to stay much longer!

Braids can symbolize different things depending on the tribe:

1. Age & Life Stage
Among the Maasai, hair changes mark transitions:
Young boys: shaved heads
Warriors (morans): long, often braided and sometimes dyed with ochre
Married women: usually shave their heads

2. Social Status
Certain styles can show if someone is:
Single or married
A mother
A warrior
3. Beauty & Identity

Braiding is a form of art and pride
It can take hours or even days, often done in groups—so it’s also social bonding
4. Cultural Expression

Different tribes in Tanzania (like the Chagga or Sukuma) have their own traditions, though modern styles today are often mixed with global fashion.

May this special day bring hope and renewal to every home, in the warm spirit of Tanzanian traditions where faith, family, and sharing are at the heart of the celebration.

If travellers associate one word with Tanzania, it might be Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, or Serengeti.

However, Swiss deep traveller Dominik Horber got even more curious. He wanted to know what word locals most associated with their story, so he asked them. Tanzanians responded overwhelmingly with the ‘Kanga’.

Find out everything about 'Kanga' in this revealing articel in One Planet Journey.
