The Great Migration in Tanzania is a yearly wildlife movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and other animals across the Serengeti ecosystem, driven by rainfall and the search for fresh grazing.
It takes place primarily in Serengeti National Park, particularly in the southern, western, and northern regions. The best times to witness different stages of the migration vary throughout the year. From February to March, the calving season occurs in the Southern Serengeti around the Ndutu area, offering incredible scenes of newborns and intense predator activity. Between June and October, the migration reaches the western and northern Serengeti, where dramatic river crossings at the Grumeti and Mara Rivers take place, often involving crocodile encounters and large-scale movement.
