Buffalos are one of the most powerful and iconic animals roaming the wild plains of Tarangire National Park. Known for its vast savannah, ancient baobab trees, and large elephant herds, Tarangire is also home to thousands of African buffalos, making it one of the best places in Tanzania to witness these impressive animals in their natural habitat.
Life in the Wild
The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a highly social animal. In Tarangire, they live in large herds that can range from 50 to several hundred individuals. Living in groups helps protect them from predators such as lions. When threatened, buffalos are known to stand their ground and defend each other — a true symbol of strength and unity.
During the dry season, Tarangire becomes a vital refuge because of the Tarangire River, which provides a reliable water source. Large buffalo herds gather around the river to drink, graze, and cool off in muddy pools. Mud bathing helps protect their skin from parasites and the hot African sun.
Diet & Daily Routine
Buffalos are herbivores and primarily feed on grasses. They spend most of their day grazing, usually during the cooler hours of the morning and late afternoon. Midday is often reserved for resting and chewing cud in shaded areas.
Lifespan & Reproduction
In the wild, African buffalos typically live 15–25 years, depending on environmental conditions and predation. Females usually give birth to one calf after a gestation period of about 11 months. Calves stay close to their mothers and are protected by the herd.
