Everyone told us Marangu Route is just Coca Cola Route, easy huts, easy summit. Nobody told us it would be an adventure that strips you to your soul and builds you again.
We booked 6 days Marangu Route climb to Mount Kilimanjaro summit and here is what you should expect on Marangu adventure, the real truth not brochure talk.
Expect first surprise at Marangu Gate, rainforest so alive you feel watched. We walked to Mandara Hut through mud and mist, colobus monkeys screaming, our guide from Uprise Africa Tours singing Kilimanjaro hakuna matata song, our group of friends laughing but already breathing hard. First night in Mandara Hut, warm bunk beds, hot tea, no tent hassle, we thought ah this is luxury.
Expect second day to break your expectations. Horombo Hut road is not easy. Moorland with giant lobelias and senecios, wind cold, sun hot, Kibo Peak appearing and disappearing like it teases you. Our legs burned, our lungs searched air at 3700m. Our head guide checked oxygen, forced three liters water, said tomorrow we climb high to survive high.
Expect day three acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, the reason we summited. We hiked to Zebra Rocks 4200m and Mawenzi base, headache came then gone, our group learned pole pole is not slow, it is wise. Night at Horombo, we shared stories with climbers from around world in the hut dining room, all scared for Kibo Hut tomorrow.
Expect summit night to be pure war. Midnight from Kibo Hut 4700m, minus 25, dark so dark, headlamp snow path, Gilman Point 5685m felt impossible, every step slide back on scree. At 4am our friend sat down crying I cannot. Our Uprise guides lifted her, one front, one back, we all linked arms, we marched as one adventure team. At Uhuru Peak 5895m sunrise set glaciers on fire pink and gold, whole Africa below clouds. We screamed, we cried, we hugged, we made it.
