In May 2019, after Nims had already summited 2 of the 14 eight-thousanders, he was still fighting to keep Project Possible alive. We came across his fundraising campaign and decided to support him. None of us imagined we were witnessing the beginning of one of the greatest achievements in mountaineering history.
Just a few years later, even people who had never cared about mountaineering knew who Nims was. A Netflix documentary introduced his story to the world, and he became an inspiration to millions.
In the summer of 2022, Nims chose Altezza Travel as his partner on Kilimanjaro and flew to Tanzania to meet us. The moment he walked out of the terminal, he made it feel as though we had known each other for years. He called me “brother” and joked with our driver all the way to the hotel.
During the expedition, Nims took hundreds of photos every day with climbers, porters, park rangers, and anyone who asked. He never refused a single person.
A few months later, we received a message from him. Nims had remembered our guides and invited them to Nepal. Together with his Elite Exped team, Joshua, Victor, and Abraham had the privilege of climbing in the Himalayas.
After that, Nims returned to Tanzania every August. Everyone here loved him, and he loved Tanzania in return.
Every time he came to Tanzania, Nims wanted to paraglide from the summit of Kilimanjaro. Every time, the weather had other plans. He would simply smile, shrug, and say: “Well, maybe next time”
Today, we learned there will be no next time.
Tanzania has lost a true friend.
We have lost a brother.
