Day One – The Journey Begins (Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut)
The air was thick with anticipation as we stood at Marangu Gate, 1,870 meters above sea level, ready to begin our ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. After months of preparation, the moment had finally arrived. The excitement was palpable, tinged with a touch of nervous energy — we were at the foot of Africa’s tallest mountain, about to step into the unknown.
The first leg of our trek took us through the lush, emerald canopy of Kilimanjaro’s rainforest. The sounds of the jungle wrapped around us — birds calling from the treetops, monkeys rustling through the branches, and the soft crunch of our boots on the damp forest floor. The trail was well-defined but occasionally slippery, reminding us to respect the terrain and pace ourselves.
Our guides set a calm, steady rhythm — “pole pole,” they reminded us, Swahili for “slowly, slowly.” It was more than advice. It was a mindset, a way to appreciate every step of the climb.
We stopped along the way to rest and refuel, exchanging smiles and stories with fellow trekkers from all over the world. It felt less like a hike and more like the beginning of something deeper — a shared journey, not just up a mountain, but inward as well.
After about four to five hours of trekking, we emerged from the forest to reach Mandara Hut at 2,720 meters. The clearing was peaceful, surrounded by trees and mist, and the simple wooden huts felt like a welcome embrace. As the sun dipped below the treetops, casting golden hues across the clearing, a quiet sense of achievement settled over the group.
Day One was complete — and with it, the first chapter of our Kilimanjaro adventure. Tired, a bit damp, but deeply inspired, we looked up at the mountain towering in the distance, knowing the real climb had just begun…
