The only type of buffalo found in the wild in Tanzania is the Cape buffalo, also known as the African buffalo. A buffalo is a large, ox-like animal with horns and shaggy fur. The Cape buffalo is the only member of the buffalo and cattle tribe that occurs naturally in Africa. Buffalos are bulk grazers that must drink daily. Males are larger than females and have curved horns that meet at the base to form a bony shield called a boss. When attacked, the adults in the herd form a circle around the young and face outward, presenting a solid "fence" of sharp horns.
