The Ancient Doors of Zanzibar
The Merchant’s Curse
In the heart of Stone Town, a wealthy merchant once commissioned the most exquisite Zanzibari door ever carved. Decorated with delicate floral motifs and grand brass studs, it was not just a door but a symbol of his power. Travelers from faraway lands admired its craftsmanship, and rumors spread that the door was blessed by spirits.
But power invites envy. One night, a jealous rival whispered a curse into the wood: “May this door never close to fortune, nor open to betrayal.” The next morning, the merchant found his home wide open—though no locks were broken. Over time, his wealth vanished, his ships were lost at sea, and one by one, his family left him.
Desperate, he tried to remove the door, but the moment he touched it, he fell ill. With his last breath, he ordered that the door remain untouched, a warning to those who seek fortune without humility. To this day, the door still stands, weathered but unmoved, whispering its silent tale to those who pass by.
If doors could talk, what stories would they tell?
