African wild dog Facts

African wild dog, also known as Cape hunting dog or painted dog, is a member of canine family. These animals inhabit open plains and woodlands of Sub-Saharan Africa. They prefer arid zones and savannas. African wild dogs are endangered species. Their number decreased greatly due to extensive killing by farmers who want to protect their livestock. Besides that, African wild dogs are prone to the diseases that affect domestic animals. Also, habitat loss negatively affects survival of African wild dogs.
Interesting African wild dog Facts:
African wild dogs can reach the height of 30 inches at shoulder. They usually weigh between 55 and 70 pounds.
African wild dogs have long legs, strong jaws and large, bat-like ears. Their body is covered with fur which has irregular patches of red, brown, black, yellow and white color.
Every animal has unique pattern of colors. This helps scientists to identify individual animals.
African wild dog looks like a domestic dog. Unlike dogs, African wild dogs have four toes instead of five on their feet.
African wild dogs live and hunt in large packs that usually consist of 6 to 20 members. Strength of the pack depends on its size. Larger packs are more successful in hunt and in raising of the young animals.
All members of the pack take good care of other animals in the pack, especially of weak, young and old individuals. They never show aggression toward other members.
Members of the pack communicate using vocalization, touch and visual signs.
Each pack of African wild dogs has a dominant female and male couple. They guide the pack and perform reproduction.
African wild dogs hunt co-operatively, usually early in the morning and late in the night. They hunt antelopes, warthogs, wildebeest, rats and birds. African wild dogs are among the most successful hunters in Africa.
African wild dog can run 35 miles per hour and travel great distances during the day. When pack has young members, daily routes become shorter.
African wild dogs are territorial animals. Average size of the pack's territory is 1500 square kilometers.
Mating occurs between dominant pair in the pack. Female has one litter per year. Number of pups per litter can range from 2 to 20. Usually, female gives birth to 10 pups. There are twice as many males than females in the litter.
All members of the group take care of the babies. After successful hunt, both females and males regurgitate swallowed food to feed the youngest members of the pack.
Although litters can have nearly 20 babies, survival rate is very small. Babies usually die as a result of floods and diseases. All females that reach maturity will leave the pack. Unlike them, males will stay within their native pack.
African wild dogs can survive up to 11 years in the wild.

HouSe Tanzana share experience one of the Expensive animal in the wildness found in Tanzania

Rhinoceros (or shortly - rhino) is the second largest land mammal (elephant is the largest). These animals can be found in Africa and Asia.
There are 5 species of rhinos and all of them are endangered because of the excessive hunting. Poachers are killing rhinos because of their horns.
Interesting Rhinoceros Facts:
Horse, zebra and tapir are the closest relatives of rhino.
Rhino can reach 6 feet in height, 11 feet in length and weigh up to 6000 pounds. Despite its huge body size, it has very small brain.
Two types of rhinos live in Africa: white and black. White rhino is not white at all. It has brownish skin and it has wider mouth compared to black rhino.
Javan rhinoceros is the rarest of all species. Only 50 animals are left in the wild. This species looks like its body is covered with heavy plates. These plates are actually folds of the skin.
Although their skin is thick, it is soft and can suffer sunburn. Rhinos cover themselves with mud to create protective layer on the skin. Mud protects their skin from insects also.
Rhinos are herbivorous animals (eat only plants). They eat grass, shrubs, leaves and shoots.
Rhinoa horns are made of the same substance (called keratin) that makes our nails.
Different species have different number of horns: Indian and Javan rhinoceros have one horn, while White, Black and Sumatran rhinos have two horns.
Longest measured horn was 4 feet and 9 inches long.
Small birds called oxpeckers remove ticks and other insects from rhino's skin.
Rhino is a fast running animal. It can run up to 40 miles per hour.
Rhinos have poor eyesight, but they have excellent sense of smell and hearing.
Group of rhinos is called a crash. Black rhinos fight often against each other. 50% of males and 30% of females die as a result of the fight.
Pregnancy lasts between 14 and 18 months and mother takes a good care of her baby. Young rhino will
leave its mother 2-4 years after it is born.
Rhinos live 40-45 years in the wild.

How?.... House Tanzania offer you more than Adventure while you give us some days from your holiday to take you Safari around Tanzania and climbing up to the roof of Africa.
Today's before we go Safari let's have look on this black animal with white stripes aka friends of tourist

ZEBRA

Zebra can be easily recognized by its specific black and white appearance. Zebras can be found in shrublands, grasslands, mountains and grasslands of Africa. There are three species of zebra: Grevy's, Mountain and Plain zebra. First two species are endangered.
Interesting Zebra Facts:
Donkeys and horses are close relatives of zebras, but unlike them, zebras can't be trained and domesticated due to their wild nature.
Zebras can be 3.5-5 feet high (at the shoulder) and weigh between 440-990 pounds.
They eat grass and leaves. Zebras can't survive without water and they need to drink it at least once per day.
Some zebras migrate during dry season. They can travel up to 500 miles per year to find place with more food and water.
Since the color of their skin is black, scientists believe that zebras are black animals covered with lwhite stripes.
Each zebra has individual pattern of stripes (number, width...) and these patterns can be used for the identification of the animals.
Stripes provide protection against predators because zebra live in large herds and too many stripes at one place usually confuse predator (he can't choose which animal he should hunt).
Zebra live in large herds with over thousands animals. They sometimes mix with antelopes, which additionally protects them against predators.
They quickly run from one side to another (zigzag) when they are trying to escape from predator.
Within large herds there are small families that consist of one male, few females and their offspring. Parents keep good care of young zebras. Male will try to chase away predator in the case of attack.

Male zebra is called stallion and female mare.
Zebras are fast animals. They can run 35 miles per hour. Newly born zebra can run an hour after it is born.
Zebra has excellent eyesight and sense of hearing.
Zebra sleep in the standing position.
They live 20-30 years in the wild and up to 40 years in captivity.
Karibu means welcome.

Hyena Facts with House Tanz near expert interpreters;
Hyenas are large, dog-like, carnivores. They live in savannas, grasslands, sub-deserts and forests of Africa and Asia. There are four types of hyena that differ in size and type of diet. Those are: spotted, brown, striped, and the aardwolf.
Interesting Hyena Facts:
Hyenas vary in size. Largest are spotted hyenas with 35 inches in height and 90 pounds in weight. Smallest are aardwolves with 20 inches in height and 60 pounds in weight.
Females are larger and more dominant than males.
Hyenas live in territorial and large clans that can consist of up to 80 members. Aardwolves are solitary animals that gather only during mating season.
They are both hunters and scavengers (they eat carrions).
Aardwolf eats termites.
They are nocturnal animals (hunt at night).
Hyenas mark their territory with white droppings produced in the a**l gland. This substance has a strong smell and it informs other hyenas that territory is already occupied.
Hyenas use various sounds, postures and signals to communicate with each other.
One of the most characteristic sounds that hyena produce is laughter. This sound alerts other hyenas that new food source is located.
Worst enemies of hyenas are lions and hunting dogs. Hyenas are cannibals. They may attack and eat other hyenas, especially when they are young.
Male and female hyenas look alike and have very similar ge****ls, but they are not hermaphrodites (animals that may act both as males and as females at the same time). Only female hyena gives birth and takes care of her cubs.
After mating season, it takes 90-110 days for babies to be born. One female gets 2-4 cubs and she takes care of them in the "natal den" (special den reserved only for mother with cubs) for 4 weeks.
Cubs fight with each other to establish dominance and achieve best feeding position or desired order of feeding. This fight might end up fatally.
Mother feeds cubs with milk 12-18 month, but they will start eating meat as soon as they reach 5th month.
Hyenas live 10-12 years in the wild and up to 25 years in captivity.
