People often vomit at high altitude because of Altitude Sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness – AMS). This happens when your body struggles to adjust to the lower oxygen levels in the air as you go higher.

Here’s why vomiting occurs at altitude:

1. Low oxygen (hypoxia):

At high altitude, the air is thinner, meaning less oxygen reaches your blood.

The brain and stomach are very sensitive to this lack of oxygen, which can trigger nausea and vomiting.

2. Changes in pressure:

The reduced air pressure affects how gases expand in the body. This can disturb the stomach and intestines, causing bloating, discomfort, and nausea.

3. Fluid imbalance & dehydration:

Cold air and increased breathing at altitude cause fluid loss.

Dehydration worsens nausea and dizziness, sometimes leading to vomiting.

4. Brain swelling (in severe cases):

If altitude sickness worsens, the brain can swell slightly (high-altitude cerebral edema – HACE). Vomiting is a warning sign that things are getting dangerous.

5. Overexertion & poor acclimatization:

Climbing too fast without giving the body time to adjust increases the risk of vomiting and other symptoms.

👉 In short: Vomiting at altitude is your body’s way of signaling that it is not adjusting well to the thin air.
