The lilac-breasted roller gets the roller part of its name from its courtship flight. It includes a fast, shallow dive from a great height, accompanied by a rolling or rocking motion and loud calls. The lilac-breasted part comes from, well, its lilac breast.

Did you know giraffes are the tallest mammals on Earth? Just their legs alone are taller than the average human, measuring around 6ft long. Despite their height, they only have 7 bones in their necks, same as us humans!

What do you call a group of flamingos? A FLAMBOYANCE. Flamingos get their pink hue from the algae and brine shrimp they eat. And yes they do fly! Often in a group they will take a v formation common in migratory birds to save energy. You know what also saves energy? Standing on one foot. For a flamingo anyway.

Get this… after laying their eggs, female hornbills seal the entrance to their nests with their own droppings and leftover food remains. Then the male feeds her and her chicks through a small opening. Talk about bedrest! This is a male Von der Decken’s hornbill.

Did you know black rhinos aren’t really black?! They range from gray to brown and got the name black rhino because they like to wallow in the mud. I mean, who doesn’t?

The black rhino is critically endangered which means they have a very high risk of extinction. Mkomazi National Park, which is just a couple hours from us here in Moshi, houses a breeding project for black rhinos.
