PRISON ISLAND (CHANGUU ISLAND) TOUR – ZANZIBAR

Just a short 30-minute boat ride from Stone Town, Prison Island (also known as Changuu Island) is one of Zanzibar’s most popular and fascinating half-day excursions. Along the way, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Stone Town’s coastline and catch glimpses of the nearby islands: Grave Island, Snake Island, and Bawe Island.

Despite its name, Prison Island was never used as an actual prison. Originally used in the 1860s by Omani Sultans to detain rebellious slaves, the British later began construction of a prison in 1892 under the direction of Zanzibar’s first British Governor, Sir Lloyd Mathews. Completed in 1894, the prison was eventually converted into a quarantine station for yellow fever cases.

Today, the island is famous for its giant Aldabra tortoises, which were imported from Seychelles in the 19th century. Some of these majestic creatures are over 150 years old. Guests can feed and interact with the tortoises and learn about the conservation efforts to protect them.

Besides the tortoises, the island is a haven for nature lovers:

Stroll through the forested interior to spot peacocks, colorful butterflies, bats, and various bird species.

Explore the coral reefs surrounding the island, which offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling and spotting vibrant marine life.

The Jozani Forest is located at the heart of the Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, about 38 km southeast of Stone Town. This lush forest is one of the best places to encounter a variety of indigenous flora and fauna, including the rare and endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey.

The best time to spot wildlife in Jozani is early in the morning. The forest is open daily from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Visitors are advised to keep at least three metres away from any wildlife and should avoid visiting if they have cold or flu-like symptoms, as the monkeys are highly susceptible to human diseases but have little to no resistance to them.

Jozani offers an excellent nature trail, and its guides are well-trained and very informative. A walk through this impressive forest is truly one of the highlights of Zanzibar. In addition to the forest itself, you can also explore the Mangrove Swamp and enjoy a walk through the unique mangrove ecosystem.
