Rongai Route – Mawenzi Tarn Hut & The Saddle to Kibo
The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro route that approaches the mountain from the northern side near the Kenya border. It is known for its quieter trails, gradual ascent, and spectacular views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The route is also drier than most other Kilimanjaro routes, making it a great choice during the rainy seasons. �

Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,330 m)
Mawenzi Tarn Hut is one of the most beautiful camps on Kilimanjaro, located beneath the dramatic, jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak. The camp sits beside a small alpine tarn (mountain lake), surrounded by rocky landscapes and stunning mountain scenery. Many climbers spend an extra acclimatization day here because the location is ideal for "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization. �

The Saddle: Between Mawenzi and Kibo
After leaving Mawenzi Tarn, trekkers cross The Saddle, a vast high-altitude desert stretching between Mawenzi (5,149 m) and Kibo (5,895 m). This area resembles a lunar landscape with almost no vegetation, volcanic gravel, and endless open views. The terrain is harsh but incredibly scenic, offering panoramic views of both peaks. The Saddle is one of the most unique sections of the Rongai Route. �

Kibo Hut (4,700–4,750 m)
At the end of the Saddle, climbers arrive at Kibo Hut, located at the base of Kibo's crater wall. This is the final camp before the summit attempt. The landscape here is barren and otherworldly, with temperatures often dropping well below freezing at night. Climbers rest here before beginning their midnight ascent toward Gilman's Point and ultimately Uhuru Peak. �
