🌙 Welcome to Zanzibar During the Holy Month of Ramadan 2026
The Holy Month of Ramadan is expected to begin on 19th February 2026 (subject to moon sighting). This is a special and spiritual time in Zanzibar, where the majority of the population observes fasting from sunrise to sunset.
Visitors are warmly welcome to experience Zanzibar during this meaningful month. Ramadan offers a unique opportunity to witness the island’s peaceful atmosphere, beautiful sunset moments, and strong sense of community.
✨ What to Expect During Ramadan in Zanzibar:
• Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset
• Hotels and resorts continue serving guests as usual within their premises
• Local restaurants not attached to hotels open after sunset
• Some shops and offices may close earlier in the afternoon
• Evenings become lively after Iftar (the breaking of the fast)
🌆 Stone Town becomes especially calm around sunset (approximately 18:30 – 19:15 hrs) as families gather to break their fast. It is a beautiful and peaceful moment in the city. Guests may wish to plan walks either before or after this time.
🤝 A Gentle Reminder
While Ramadan practices do not apply to visitors, we kindly encourage guests to:
• Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours
• Dress modestly in public areas (covering shoulders and knees)
• Be mindful of local customs and traditions
These small gestures are greatly appreciated and help create a positive and respectful travel experience.
