Bi Khole bint Said was a distinguished 19th-century Zanzibari princess, renowned for her independence, intellect, and significant role in the island's history.

Life and Legacy
Born in 1828 to Sultan Said bin Sultan and his Assyrian consort Najmu Sabah, Bi Khole was celebrated for her beauty and strong character She managed her own clove plantations and was known for her administrative acumen, often overseeing her father's affairs and advising him on matters that contributed to Zanzibar's prominence Unlike many women of her era, Bi Khole chose not to marry or have children, a decision that led to various legends and speculations about her personal life

Bi Khole’s Estate in Bungi
Bi Khole established a seaside estate in Bungi, central Unguja Island, as a retreat from Stone Tow. The estate featured Persian-style baths, fountains, and a courtyard, reflecting her refined tast. The approach to the estate is lined with rows of mango trees, which have inspired local legend. One tale suggests that each tree was planted for a lover she discarded, though historians attribute the planting to a Turkish botanist, Al Haj Amin, commissioned by her uncle, Sultan Barghash

Restoration Effort

Recognizing the historical value of Bi Khole’s estate, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar initiated restoration project In 2018, contracts were signed with local companies to rehabilitate the ruins, aiming to preserve the site and promote cultural tourism

Visiting Today

Visitors can explore the Bi Khole ruins, which offer insights into Zanzibar's royal ps. The site is accessible via a road shaded by the famed mango trees For a more immersive experience, guided bike tours are available, allowing visitors to engage with local communities and learn about the island's history and traditions

Pingwe Beach, located on the Michamvi Peninsula on the east coast of Zanzibar, is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere, making it an exceptional spot to witness sunrises. The beach faces east, toward the open Indian Ocean, which positions it perfectly for unobstructed views of the sun as it rises over the horizon. Visitors often describe the sunrises here as breathtaking, with the sky transforming into a palette of warm hues—think soft pinks, fiery oranges, and golden yellows—reflecting off the calm, turquoise waters. The gentle lapping of waves and the cool morning breeze add to the serene ambiance, offering a peaceful start to the day.

The beach itself is characterised by powdery white sand, fringed with lush palm trees, and the shallow, clear waters are ideal for wading or simply enjoying the view. Unlike some of Zanzibar’s busier beaches, Pingwe retains a quieter, more laid-back vibe, which enhances the sunrise experience by providing a sense of solitude and connection with nature. The tidal nature of the beach means that at low tide, the water recedes significantly, exposing sandbanks that can make for a unique foreground as the sun climbs into the sky.

For the best experience, early risers can stake out a spot along the shore in The View of Zanzibar beachfront accommodations, to witness this. The nearby The Rock Restaurant perched on a coral outcrop just offshore, is a notable landmark that might be visible in the soft morning light, adding a picturesque element to the scene. Posts on X and various travel sources consistently highlight Pingwe Beach as a magical place for sunrises, with its unspoiled beauty and calm setting making it a standout on Zanzibar’s east coast. If you’re there, the dry season (June to late March) is often recommended for clearer skies, though the sunrise can be spectacular year-round, weather permitting.

🧭 East-Facing Beach
Pingwe Beach sits on the eastern coast of Zanzibar, directly facing the Indian Ocean. This orientation gives you unobstructed views of the sunrise, where the sun slowly lifts over the horizon in a spectacular wash of pinks, oranges, and golds.

🌊 Calm Waters & Tide Pools
During low tide, the reef stretches out into the ocean, creating shallow pools that reflect the morning light like mirrors. It’s especially stunning when the beach is quiet—just the soft sound of the waves and the occasional fisherman walking out to sea.

🏝 Tranquil Setting
Unlike the busier northern beaches of Zanzibar, Pingwe retains a peaceful, village vibe. There are no large crowds—just the serenity of the sea, soft powdery sand, and the gentle rustling of palm trees. It’s a perfect place for morning meditation, yoga, or simply sipping a coffee with your feet in the sand.

📸 Incredible for Photography
Because of the way the light plays across the water and sand, sunrise is the best time to capture ethereal, dreamlike photos—especially with the silhouette of The Rock Restaurant in view. It’s a favorite among photographers and travelers looking to capture that “Zanzibar magic.”

If you're at The View of Zanzibar, you're in one of the most perfect spots on the island to enjoy this moment—especially from your ocean-view bar or with a morning breakfast on the balcony.

© The View of Zanzibar in Michamvi truly seems like a slice of paradise. What stands out most about this property is its stunning panoramic views. Imagine waking up every morning to a breathtaking vista of the turquoise Indian Ocean, framed by a pristine white sandy beach. This view alone makes it an exceptional place for anyone looking to find peace and rejuvenation. The natural beauty of the location is so mesmerizing that it's easy to see why it could capture your heart, offering an endless visual feast that you could admire day after day without ever growing tired of it. Our beloved Rocky is no longer with us anymore.
We were fortunate to have known Rocky for 4 years. He came to see us when Yudee and I were lodging at Mnana . Ever since that day he was with us and followed us when we moved into one of our own apartments during construction.
All of our guest that stayed with us or visited our place felt his kind spirit.
Rocky was known to all of us on Pingwe Beach and he will be missed.
Rest in peace Rocky.
We’ll never forget you
