Zanzibar: o față mai puțin cunoscută.
Dincolo de plajele cu nisip alb și apele turcoaz în care se scaldă micul arhipelag există o cultură și-o istorie presărată cu lumină și întuneric deopotrivă ce contrastează puternic.
Colonizat de 3 ori, începând cu portughezii, continuând cu Sultanatul Omanului și terminând cu Marea Britanie, acest mic colț de Pământ s-a aflat atât în calea, cât și la intersecția marilor puteri din secolele 16-20.
În trecutul nu foarte îndepărtat, Zanzibarul a fost centrul comerțului cu sclavi din Africa de Est, fenomen ce s-a sfârșit “pe hârtie” în anul 1873, dar efectiv, abia în anul 1909 sclavia a fost abolită definitiv.
Dincolo de această pagină întunecată din istoria micului stat există o cultură vibrantă, un melanj de influențe indiene, arabe sau persane, toate așezate în straturi interconectate pe baza pur africană a micului arhipelag.
Pentru călătorul ce privește nu doar cu ochii ci și cu sufletul, Zanzibarul se transformă dintr-un paradis tropical într-un roller-coaster emoțional care, vrei nu vrei, va lăsa o amprentă adâncă.

Zanzibar: A Lesser Known Face.
Beyond the white sand beaches and turquoise waters that bathe the tiny archipelago lies a culture and history sprinkled with both light and dark that contrast sharply.

In the not-so-distant past, Zanzibar was the center of the East African slave trade, a phenomenon that ended "on paper" in 1873, but effectively, only in 1909 was slavery finally abolished.
Beyond this dark page in the history of the small state there is a vibrant culture, a melange of Indian, Arab or Persian influences, all laid in interconnected layers on the purely African basis of the small archipelago.
