6 slang words understood only by locals which you will not find in a dictionary

While visiting Russian speaking Ukrainian cities you will hear words, which you may not find in the dictionary. Don`t panic and don`t rush to return your ticket. We are going to tell you the meaning of these words and you will be on the same page.

Trempel
It is known as a hanger or a coat rack. It is an appliance to hang clothes to avoid wrinkles. The origin of “trempel” is that Trempel was a surname of a manufacturer who was producing hangers on the territory of Slobozhanshchyna.

Кulek
It means a polyethylene bag and while queueing in the supermarket at the counter you will hear such phrase”. Do you need kulek?” It comes from the word “kul” which used to mean a bag.

Scho
It is considered to be a Kharkov word. It is simplified phonetic form of the word “what”.

Masterka
We call a light sport zipped coat like this. It is supposed to come from a word “master” which sounded the same with sport master.

Scho popalo
It is the whole expression. It is only two words that mean a lot, usually expressing criticism. You can interpret it like this “What I can see is absolutely terrible and it`s no good.” If you want to give a negative opinion, you can say “scho popalo”, pronouncing it with a negative tone.

Baklazhka
It means a plastic bottle. It originates from the word “baklaga”, which in its turn means a container with a narrow bottleneck. Usually it is filled with water.

Laryok
It is a specific sales outlet, which is considered to be a temporary point of sale. But can be situated at the same place for years. You can buy a bottle of water, ci******es, chewing gum, a lighter and nuts there. You cannot enter a laryok, you can buy the goods only over the counter in a small window.

Knowing such words will make you feel “ours”.

The oldest universities of Ukraine with interesting histories.

Since March 2020 both Ukrainian students and schoolchildren had been studying remotely. They were even taking exams online. We used to have two students in our team, who were passing exams in Zoom, using lap top where on the other end was a teacher and the rest of the group of students. Finally starting from the first of September, students returned to higher educational establishments. What can be better than meeting your university friends and favourite teachers after a long lockdown? Some higher institutions keep mixed educational process and provide both face-to-face teaching and remote education.

Let me share with you a list of the oldest universities, which have an interesting history in our country.

National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy which has a short name “Mohylyanka”. This university was founded in 1615. Mohylyanka is considered to be a successor of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and one of the oldest higher establishment of Ukraine, and also one of the oldest higher schools in Eastern Europe. It had been demolished and closed, but in 1991 after gaining Ukrainian Independence, it was reconstructed in three weeks. And now it is functioning as a powerful higher educational establishment. Established on the principles of humanitarianism and enlightment, Academy spreaded education, contributed to school opening, founded libraries and theatre.

Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, especially its red building is popular not only among many Ukrainians but also among foreigners. It was founded in 1834 and by now it has been a national landmark and a symbol of national fundamental university education. On the base of the university 14 departments and 7 educational establishments were created, where 25 thousand of students study. Such famous places as for example Botanical garden of Fomin and astronomical observatory belong to the university too.

Where do Ukrainians spend their vacations during pandemic time?

This spring the whole world has changed because of pandemic and quarantine measures.

But still, there is an opportunity to travel, among such countries are Turkey, Egypt, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia, favorite countries for vacation among Ukrainians, every day the list is getting longer.

But there is a good part of it, the circumstances contributed to domestic tourism though.

Where do Ukrainians go for a vacation now?

Odessa

A city for civilization admires situated at the shore of the Black sea. You will find a luxurious ancient architecture, a variety of cafes with open terrace, parties and many beaches. There is a cable car, which takes you to one of the central beaches straight to the seashore where you can admire an impressive sea view from the window. Odessa is loud, unexpected and hilarious. Here you can meet people from different parts of the country, even your close neighbor – everything is possible in Odessa.

Carpathians

Both Ukrainian and foreign tourists love Carpathians. Ukrainian Carpathians are divided into two different worlds, which are called Transcarpathia and Carpathian region. The nature here is very rich and diverse. There are great forests, rivers, streams and mountains of course. In summer time people come here to hike, live in tents admiring nature tranquility and peace. In winter time you can go skiing and snowboarding. If quarantine continues, you know where to look for us in winter.

Kirillovka

This village is located at the shore of Azov sea in Zaporozhie region. It is a typical beach resort created for those who love spending the whole day sunbathing and listen to sea surf. There are many seagulls, it is famous for jellyfish, during storms there are a lot of them by the shore, so only the bravest can enter the sea at that time. Azov sea is not very deep in comparison to the Black one, because it suits those who cannot swim or only learns.
