Yes, hostels are usually cheaper than hotels. But this rule works if you are traveling alone and in an expensive country.
If you are traveling with at least two people, then saving on a hostel becomes practically meaningless, especially, say, in Eastern Europe, where a room in a good hotel can often cost 25 euros for two, including breakfast.
