Did you know that poplars on Shevchenko Boulevard have been growing for 180 years? Today we will take a virtual tour of this city artery and tell you about Governor Dmitry Bibikov. Shevchenko Boulevard is one of the four streets of the so-called "New building" ("new building") - a new part of Kyiv, which arose according to the first General Plan in the history of the city. Its author is Vikenty Beretti, the architect of the Red Building of the University of St. Vladimir (named after Shevchenko). The "new building" expanded Kyiv beyond the borders of the princely city of the eleventh century. Previously, the boulevard was called Universitetsky, and since the 1860s - Bibikovsky, in honor of the enemy Taras Shevchenko. Also, the boulevard, which was paved in 1840, became the first place in Kyiv, where the famous pyramidal poplars were planted.
Dmitry Bibikov was the governor-general of Kyiv, Podolsk, and Volyn, and it was he who, being the head of the “South-West Territory”, sent Taras Shevchenko into exile in the case of the Kyiv-Methodius brotherhood.
But back to the poplars. These noble trees were lucky, as linden trees were originally planted on the boulevard, which did not take root. But poplars not only began to grow well but almost immediately became the hallmark of Kyiv. These trees outlined not only a new street from Khreshchatyk to Galitskaya Square (Victory Square) but also a new district, of which the Kievsky Railway Station became a part in 1870. We can feel the spirit of that time from the first Kyiv photographs.
Although Bibikov did not like the Kyiv-Methodius Brotherhood and Taras Shevchenko, a lot was done under him in Kyiv. What was built under Dmitry Bibikov in Kyiv?
✅Red building of the University;
✅the First and Second Kyiv grammar schools were opened;
✅Cadet Corps;
✅the first park in Kyiv for public use on Vladimirskaya Gorka;
✅the first capital Chain Bridge;
✅New Pechersk Fortress
✅various cultural and educational institutions;
One of Bibikov's goals was to weaken the Polish influence on Kyiv and Right-Bank Ukraine as a whole. For this, he actively developed ethnographic and historical studies of the Ukrainian people, rather than against his own will, cultivated Ukrainophile sentiments. It was under him that the foundations of the scientific study of Ukraine were laid. Ukrainian scientists Panteleimon Kulish, Mikhail Maksimovich, Nikolay Kostomarov were able to work openly.
On Bibikovsky Boulevard, 36, there was the house of the lawyer, writer, and public figure of the Ukrainianophile Oleksandr Koniskiy. He is also known as the mentor of Mikhail Hrushevsky. Participants of semi-legal Ukrainian organizations gathered in this house. They were engaged in important business: compiled dictionaries, printed historical sources, recorded folklore. It was a subtle, but extremely necessary work for the benefit of the future statehood of Ukraine.
Opposite Konisky's house, there was a monument to Count O. Bobrinsky, a patron of the Kyiv railway, the owner of one of the largest sugar factories in Ukraine. Graf was an innovator - it was at his factory that steam engines were first used to produce sugar. His Excellency stood on a pedestal in an ancient Greek toga. Now on the site of the monument to Bobrinsky, there is a monument to Shchors.
They want to demolish the monument with Shchors, although it is, nevertheless, perhaps the best monument of Kyiv of the Soviet era. Progressive Kievites recommend slightly altering Shchors' face and giving it a different name. Fortunately, there are enough patriots and outstanding citizens among the sons of Kyiv.
