Hippos live in a group called a school of hippos led by the alpha male. But female hippos usually isolate themselves whenever they are about to give birth. This is because if they give birth to a male while in the school, the alpha male will kill the baby to make sure its not a threat when it grows up.
After giving birth, if its a female, the mother will return to the school right away with the baby but if its a male, they will both stay away until the male can survive on its own.
