Meet Siato from the Bitukura family, one of the oldest habituated female mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, estimated to have been born in 1977. That makes her about 49 years old!

Siato has lived long enough to see her species recover from the brink of extinction. She herself survived getting extinct!

Stories like these keep pushing us to safeguard the health of mountain gorillas so that we can have more Siatos free and healthy in the wild.

An intense interaction occurred recently between the Ntambara group and the Segasira group in Volcanoes National Park. Gorillas from both groups stood close to each other. All the males were displaying and charging, while others were loudly screaming, making the scene appear very alarming.

Segasira, the only adult male in his group, was forced to handle a clear numerical disadvantage, facing four males from the Ntambara group, which is also much larger overall, with 16 gorillas compared to the 9 in Segasira’s group. Despite this, he worked hard to keep the females and infants safe.

Both groups have very young infants, which may explain the high level of tension during the interaction. Fortunately, the encounter ended without any injuries or consequences. 🦍
