Mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) are an endangered species, with only about 1,063 individuals remaining in the wild. Found in the misty forests of the Virunga Mountains and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, these great apes share 98% of their DNA with humans.

They live in close-knit family groups, led by a dominant silverback, and are known for their intelligence and gentle behavior.

Conservation efforts have helped their numbers rise, but they still face threats like habitat loss and disease.
