You may walk through Semuliki without noticing how much life is moving above you. 🐒

The forest canopy can be surprisingly busy.

During a primate-watching experience in Semuliki National Park, careful observers may encounter species such as red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys moving through the forest.

But spotting them is not always about luck.

Sometimes, the best way to understand a park is to slow down and walk through it. 🥾

Water pools play an important role in wildlife habitats. They provide drinking water and can attract animals from different parts of the ecosystem. During drier periods, reliable water becomes even more important for wildlife.

In Lake Mburo National Park, walking offers a different perspective.

You notice the small things first: footprints in the soil, birds calling from the vegetation, insects moving through the grass, plants along the trail and signs showing that wildlife passed through.

Then you reach a water source and the bigger picture becomes clearer.

Animals don’t simply visit these places by chance. Water influences where wildlife moves, feeds and rests.

A boat trip along the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park offers a different way to experience Uganda’s wildlife.

From the water, you can often spot hippos, elephants, buffaloes and crocodiles along the channel, while numerous waterbirds gather around the shoreline and wetlands.

A gorilla trek can be one of the most memorable days of your Uganda safari. But what comes before or after it matters too. 🦍🌊

Lake Bunyonyi is a great stop to combine with gorilla trekking in southwestern Uganda.

Before your trek, it offers a peaceful setting among hills, islands and water. You can enjoy the scenery, take a canoe or boat ride and settle into the slower rhythm of the area.

After trekking, it can be the perfect place to unwind after a day in the forest, enjoy a meal overlooking the lake and reflect on your gorilla encounter.

It creates a nice contrast: an active day in the forest followed by quiet time beside the water.

Limited mobility does not always mean missing the mountain gorillas. 🦍

The forest trails can be challenging, but elderly travelers and guests who cannot walk independently may receive assistance from trained porters.

Depending on the traveler’s needs and the terrain, specially designed stretchers or locally made carrying chairs can be used to help them move through the forest.

It takes teamwork, patience and careful planning, with safety for the traveler, gorillas and trekking team kept in mind.

There is another special primate experience waiting in Volcanoes National Park.

There is more to Semuliki than a hot spring. Look a little closer, and the whole forest begins to tell a story.

At Sempaya Hot Springs, the story starts beneath the ground. Geothermal heat creates the hot springs, with steam rising into the forest air.

Walk farther and another story unfolds.

The forest becomes a place for birding, with calls coming from the canopy. Look carefully and you may encounter primates moving through the trees. Follow a nature trail and you begin noticing the smaller details: plants, insects, sounds and signs of life that are easy to miss when you rush.
