When you think of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, mountain gorillas may be the first thing that comes to mind. But rising above its forests are three magnificent volcanoes that tell an equally fascinating story.

Mount Muhabura – 4,127 metres

Muhabura is the highest of Mgahinga’s three volcanoes. Its distinctive cone can be seen from considerable distances and forms one of the most recognisable features of the landscape.

Mount Gahinga – 3,474 metres

Gahinga is the lowest of the three volcanoes. Its name is associated with a small pile or heap of stones, and the mountain’s upper slopes feature striking high-altitude vegetation.

Mount Sabyinyo – 3,669 metres

Sabyinyo is particularly distinctive because of its rugged, eroded summit. The mountain lies close to the meeting point of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
