Spend a week in Uganda and you’ll quickly lose count of the wildlife encounters.

This morning in the Kasenyi Plains, it was Jacob the lion, then Shan and her daughter, the two leopards, before buffaloes, hippos, Uganda kobs and waterbucks filled out the morning.

By afternoon, we were on the Kazinga Channel, getting close to elephants and crocodiles along the banks, with birds everywhere you looked.

And because Queen Elizabeth National Park sometimes saves something for the drive home, another male lion showed up along the Channel Track before we called it a day.

That’s one day.

A few metres between you and a rhino feels very different when you’re standing there on foot.

Rhinos once disappeared completely from Uganda’s wild. Today, at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, you can walk through their habitat with a ranger and see them remarkably close.

It’s one of Uganda’s great wildlife comeback stories — and quite something to experience at ground level.

Another great week on safari in Uganda and Rwanda. Here are a few portraits from the road.

We trekked gorillas in Bwindi and Volcanoes, reenacted a traditional Rwandan marriage, crossed the wild waters of the Kazinga Channel and the Nile, played hide-and-seek with lions, danced with locals, and came home with plenty of stories to tell.

This week, we get to do it all over again.

In Uganda, you never quite know how a chimp trek will unfold.

Some mornings, you find them high in the canopy. Other times, a mother and her baby move quietly across the forest floor. You follow, watch, photograph and slowly settle into their rhythm.

And then one decides to come a little closer than expected.

That’s Kibale. The forest sets the pace, the chimps make their own plans, and you simply get to be there for it.

Spend a morning under Kibale’s forest canopy, following chimpanzees through the undergrowth and watching them go about life in the wild.

But the chimps are only part of Kibale.

The gorilla trekking experience in Uganda can be unpredictable. You'll never know what you come across.

You could be crossing rivers, cutting down bushes to make way or even get your boots stuck in the mud.

But that's what the whole experience is about. Nothing curated or prepared for you. You face the jungle head on.

Advice: go with a porter and pick up a walking stick to help you navigate.

Kibale gets even better when you give it enough time.

Our guests tracked chimpanzees twice — once in the morning and again in the afternoon — and came back talking about how different the two experiences felt.

The morning was all movement. The chimps were active, the forest was alive, and keeping up was part of the fun.

In the afternoon, the pace slowed. There was more time to settle into the forest, watch the chimps closely and take those photographs you hope for when you come to Kibale.

Same forest. Same chimpanzees. Two very different moments.

If you have the time, do both. You’ll understand the difference when you’re there.
