Nothing. Really!

You sit. You wait. You watch a lion sleep through the heat, a chimp stretch out on a branch, and a monkey give the day very little effort.

Somewhere between the long pauses, the dust, the wind and the silence, you begin to notice more.

This morning’s cat sightings in Queen Elizabeth were something else. These are the surprises that make a Uganda safari so rewarding.

The moment that stayed with us was a leopard with its prey, a young gazelle. He looked completely full because he kept kissing, nuzzling and tossing it around as if mama never disciplined him for playing with their food. Silly cat.

Wildlife always keeps a little of the story to itself.

Rangers have walked beside Nkuringo from the beginning.

They read signs in the forest, protect wildlife and help every guest move through wild places with care.

On World Ranger Day, we thank the rangers serving across national parks and remember those injured or lost in the line of duty.

We started at the trekking centre, still bright with anticipation. Then the trail dropped into Bwindi. Conversation faded. Boots searched for firm ground, and the forest slowly took over.

The cameras lift...

A head of us, a silverback stood steady and watchful. We stayed still and followed the ranger’s lead. After a few careful moments, his posture softened enough for us to remain.

Just beyond him was the reason the encounter felt so closely guarded: a baby gorilla, barely a month old, playing against its mother while she rested with one eye still on the little one.

By the time we returned to the UWA office, the certificates felt like only one part of the day. What stayed with us was the waiting, the quiet and those few minutes beside a gorilla family at rest and the jovial new born. Aaahhh!

Gorilla trekking asks for patience, respect and a willingness to move at the forest’s pace.
