A REAL NATURE WALK TO THE ‘TOP OF THE WORLD’ ON NYAMIRIIMA HILL
The nature walk to the ‘Top of the World’ begins at CVK Gardens on Lake Nyabikere. Unlike other walks that follow the MAIN road, this one is a real one that actually goes through the jungle, grassland and across the community. From Rweteera Trading Centre where there is an open-air Market, the tourist has of necessity to abandon the main road and then cross River Buhoro, one of the five rivers that join L. Nyabikere.
The real purpose of this adventure is to walk along the edge of the three crater lakes, experiencing the rich flora, fauna and landscape of the area, the humble hippo, various monkey species, many species of trees, butterflies, and numerous bugs.
After leaving R. Buhoro one turns left soon after Nyinabulitwa Guest House and walks partly around L. Nyinabulitwa until one enters the jungle containing tall trees, including the huge, buttressed and towering Cynometra alexandri. In L. Nyinabulitwa there is ‘Marshall’, the humble harmless hippo that has been here for over 15 years. How it loves drinking soapy water! The hippo spends most of its time in L. Nyinabulitwa, quite close to Ole’s ‘Tree House’. Ole is the Danishman who owns Nyinabulitwa Guest House.
In the thick jungle there is a tree house, mounted high up in one of the many Cynometra trees. It is a beauty to see! After the tree house one follows the humble ‘Hippo Highway’ while observing several primates (black and white colobus, red tailed and vervet monkeys) and many bird species until one reaches Lake Nyamirima, which is at the foot of Nyamirima Hill. The top of this hill is popularly known as the ‘Top of the World’. One climbs a fairly steep hill through the woodland and grassland before he/she arrives at a fairly flat area, known as the Observatory Point marked by a purple leafed shrub.
Here one is able to afford magnificent, picturesque and breath-taking views of the surroundings, near and far, including the three crater lakes in a straight line all at once. As tremors continue in the Great Lakes Region, the three lakes could perhaps one day possibly form one bigger lake. The lakes mentioned above are Nyamirima (the ‘dark lake’), Nyinabulitwa (the mother of Bulitwa) and Nyabikere (the ‘lake of frogs’).
You can book with CVK lakeside resort beach with the above address.
