Kyaninga Lodge is the brainchild of Mr Steven Williams who came to Uganda for a Safari and never left. After seeing the beauty of Lake Kyaninga ,which you now have before you, he decided it would be the perfect place to let his imagination run wild. The lodge took 6 years to complete, whereby two of these were invested purely in the training of local people. Experts from around the UK and mainland
Europe were invited out to teach local people in various trades including thatching, masonary, welding, carpentry, electrics and plumbing. It was Steve’s vision to create a lodge that was truly Ugandan and so we have only used local building materials in creating this masterpiece. The stone pillars are made from the volcanic rock that forms the crater, all timbers used, whether it be Eucalyptus for the logs or Elgon Olive for the furniture, all are found locally and even the grass used for thatching is of the Semiliki variety. No cranes or lifting machines were used in the construction which makes it more understandable as to why 130 people were needed to complete the project, many of whom are now putting their learnt trades to use in Steve’s second adventure, Kyaninga Homes, producers of fine furniture and log homes. Lodge
The main lodge comprises of the dining area and the bar area. Each area has an upstairs gallery with spectacular views of Lake Kyaninga and the Rwenzori Mountains, ideal for romantic evenings or those looking for a little more privacy. Furthermore, if you wish to dine upstairs please feel free to contact a member of staff who will be happy to arrange it. The bar area has a very unique, double-sided, open fire place which we light every evening around sunset. We kindly ask our guests to refrain from throwing any paper into the fire as this can travel along way up the chimney and we're quite fond of our thatch roofs. We have an extensive range of spirits and liqueurs and we hope to accommodate for everyone’s taste. If, however, there is something you feel we need to have to make our list complete, let one of our barmen know and we will do our best to order it for your next visit. For those guests wishing to check their emails we offer wireless LAN in the main lodge. The password to access the internet is 'Kyaninga' but as a courtesy to our other guests we ask you to refrain from downloading files larger than a few megabytes. The lodge is set at a considerable height above the ground so please keep this in mind, especially if travelling with young children. Food and Drink
At Kyaninga we make every effort to meet the needs of our guests and this is of course true of our kitchen. If you have any dietary requirements you would like us to take into consideration, please let us know and we'll be happy to adjust our menu. Lunch and dinner are served between 1pm-2pm and 7-8pm respectively. However, if you would like to dine outside of these times our kitchen is happy to prepare your meal at any time. We have an extensive breakfast buffet and a breakfast menu and, for those who wish, we can serve tea and coffee to your room, with wake-up call if needed. One of the defining features of Kyaninga Lodge has to be the pool which took 6 months to complete. If you look carefully at the line of rock flowing down the hill (flowing in its literal sense as this was once a lava flow)you will notice that the pool has been carved out of the rock face. This took 6 months of jack-hammering and was one of the most time consuming projects at Kyaninga Lodge. At its shallowest the pool is 1.20m in depth and slowly increases to a depth of 2.40m. We ask that children be supervised at all times and stress that it is strictly prohibited to jump from the terrace into the pool. Below the pool are two private terraces, each built on reclaimed land and perfect for a sundowner or for guests looking for a little more privacy. We are happy to serve you food or drink to either terrace so please don't hesitate to contact a member of staff. The lower of the two terraces has a small fireplace which can be lit upon request. The tennis court at Kyaninga is the only grass court to be found in the country and there are plans to hold the first lawn court competitions here. Balls and rackets can be borrowed upon request and our staff will be happy to serve you any refreshments down at court-side. In addition to tennis we also have a badminton court which can double as a croquet field. All the neccessary equipment for both games is available upon request at the main lodge. And don't hesitate to ask one of our strapping barmen to assist you with the croquet set, its not the lightest of bags. Rooms
For your convenience, each cabin is fitted with three plugs sockets. The first can be found at the desk, in the corner next to the bathroom, while the second two are situated on each side of the mosquito net trim. Kyaninga Lodge operates a no smoking policy inside all of the cottages and the main lodge. In trying to meet the needs of all our guests each room has been supplied with an ashtray but we would kindly request any smokers to do so on their veranda. Please do not dispose of ci******es into the bush as, for obvious reasons, this presents a serious fire hazard. For guests wishing to read in bed or simply have a little more light there is a light fitted above each of the beds. We advise all guests not to consume water from the tap. Although Lake Kyaninga is rated as one of the cleanest lakes in the whole of East Africa we still advise against drinking water from the tap and thus provide bottled drinking water in each cabin. If you are travelling with valuables or sums of money that you are not comfortable having on your person, or you are simply worried about losing your wedding ring in the forest or pool, please feel free to use the safe that has been fitted in each room. The safes are set to the combination number ''1234B''. To change the combination, please hold the red button on the inside of the door for 2 seconds until a beeping sound is heard. You can now enter a 4 digit plus one letter combination. We would ask you to kindly leave the safe open upon departure so as to enable the next guests easily reset the combination. If for any reason you the safe is not operational please contact a member of staff who will be happy to assist you. As previously stated, Kyaninga Lodge runs solely on solar power and while this form of energy can meet 99% of the requirements, there is the odd exception. One of these is hair-dryers which have an incredibly high energy consumption. We would kindly ask anyone wishing to use a hair-dryer to inform a member of staff first so that we can start our back-up generator which can supply such an appliance with the required power. We aim for the highest standards at Kyaninga and obviously this includes changing the bath towels on a daily basis. However, we are also aware of our responsibility to the surrounding environment and the less power or water we have to use, the better. If it is not required that the towels be changed on a daily basis please inform one of our room attendants. In our drive to protect the environment we also use solar boilers to heat the water for the showers and the bath. If for any reason you feel our water is not hot enough please contact a member of staff. Each cabin is fitted with a Tanganyika boiler, which uses firewood to heat water quickly, and is available for all our guests who like their water that little bit hotter.
