Thinking of Starting a Small Farm? Here’s an idea worth planting…
Maize and soybean are two of the most viable crops for low-scale farmers in Africa.
Why? Because they’re:
✅ Easy to grow
✅ High in demand
✅ Great for food security and income

With just a small plot and the right strategy, you can start producing for local markets — or even your household — without breaking the bank.

Homesteading Tips:
How to Test Your Soil at Home!
Want healthier plants and better harvests? Soil testing helps you understand your soil’s nutrients, pH, and contaminants, so you can grow strong, thriving crops!

Why Soil Testing Matters:
• Check Nutrient Levels – Know if your soil has enough Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium.
• Test pH Levels – Find out if your soil is acidic, neutral, or alkaline (affects plant growth).
• Detect Contaminants – Spot heavy metals, pesticides, or excess salts.
Prevent Over-Fertilisation – Avoid waste & protect the environment!

How to Test Your Soil at Home:
DIY pH Test with Vinegar & Baking Soda
🔹 Pour vinegar on a soil sample—fizzing = alkaline soil
(pH above 7).
🔹 If no reaction, mix another sample with baking soda + distilled water—fizzing = acidic soil (pH below 7).
🔹 No reaction? Your soil is neutral (pH ~7).
🧪 Using a Soil Test Kit
✔️ Collect soil from different areas.
✔️ Follow kit instructions to mix soil with test solutions.
✔️ Compare colour results to determine pH & nutrient levels.

Understanding your soil = stronger plants & a better harvest!

DIY Mason Jar Soil Test!
Ever wondered what kind of soil you have in your land? the Mason Jar Soil Test is a super easy way to check your soil texture (sand, silt, and clay) – and it can tell you a LOT about how well your soil drains, holds nutrients, and supports plant growth!
How to Do It:
1️- Fill a mason jar 1/3 full with soil from your land.
2️- Add water until almost full + a few drops of washup liquid.
3️- Shake it for 2-3 minutes & let it sit for 24 hours.
4️- Watch the layers settle:
🔹 Sand settles first (bottom)
🔸 Silt in the (middle)
⚪ Clay on top (takes the longest)
What It Means:
✅ Sandy Soil – Drains fast, needs more organic matter.
✅ Loamy Soil – Perfect balance, great for gardening!
✅ Clay Soil – Holds water, may need aeration & compost.
Try it out & drop a pic of your soil test below! 📸👇
👉 Stay tuned! Our next post will be all about testing your soil’s pH at home! 🧪🌍

"Self-Sufficient Living'' (A Sustainable Guide)

Some ideas to help you maximise your land and resources:

1. Food Production
Crop Farming: Grow staple foods like maize, millet, sorghum, cassava, sweet potatoes, and beans.
Permaculture: Mix different crops (intercropping) and use natural methods to improve soil fertility.
Fruit Trees: Plant mango, banana, papaya, guava, and avocado for long-term food security.

Vegetable Garden: Grow fast-growing, nutrient-rich vegetables like kale, spinach, amaranth, tomatoes, and peppers.
Herbs & Medicinal Plants: Cultivate lemongrass, moringa, aloe vera, and neem for health benefits.

2. Livestock & Poultry
Chickens: Keep free-range chickens for eggs and meat.
Goats or Sheep: Small ruminants provide milk, meat, and manure.
Rabbits: Easy to raise, reproduce fast, and provide protein-rich meat.
Fish Farming: Dig a small pond and raise tilapia or catfish.
Beekeeping: Produces honey, wax, and helps with pollination.

3. Water Management
Rainwater Harvesting: Collect rainwater in tanks for irrigation and household use.
Borehole or Well: If possible, dig a well for a steady water supply.
Drip Irrigation: Use water-efficient irrigation methods to grow crops.
Mulching & Composting: Retain soil moisture and improve fertility.

4. Energy & Cooking
Solar Power: Install solar panels for lighting and charging devices.
Biogas: Convert animal and crop waste into cooking gas.
Fuel-Efficient Stoves: Use improved cooking stoves to save firewood and reduce smoke.

5. Shelter & Construction
Earthbag or Mud Brick House: Use locally available materials for a low-cost, durable home.
Thatched Roof: Use palm leaves or grass for roofing.
Simple Fencing: Grow a live fence with thorny bushes like acacia or use bamboo.

6. Income Generation
Selling Farm Produce: Sell surplus crops, eggs, honey, or vegetables.
Handicrafts & Carpentry: Make baskets, furniture, or traditional crafts.
Agro-Tourism: Teach others sustainable farming techniques.
